False.

based

I disagree, though it should be secondary - or if you're making a game where story is a big element make it tie into the game world/gameplay seamlessly like Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Metroid Prime, Undertale, etc.

Undertale is the GOAT because of its story. You = pwned.

story, in any game, is all that matters

>story in Fallout, one of the greatest games ever made, is irrelevant

As much as I adhere to the "gameplay is more important than story" ethos overall, I refuse to be baited into thinking that only one approach to vidya design can be right. That's just dumb.

>play cinematic experience like Uncharted or God of War
>barely feel compelled to play through it the first time, story isn't compelling
>even if it was, it just can't justify a second playthrough
>go right back and play through a game without story, because of how good the gameplay is

This kind of shit is the cancer that killed Clive Barker's Undying in the first place.
'Lol who cares about Clive Barker's lore and characters in a game sold by Clive Barker's name? If you want focus on writing, you should just read a book! Let's give player 50 more monsters to shoot at instead!' - that's probably what the devs thought and that's what your philosophy is, right?
Funny, Clive Barker is a literal faggot, and yet he is not as much of a faggot as you are, OP.

Pathologic 2 got released 2 months ago btw. Go play it for the story.

A bad story can make an otherwise decent game shit.
Story is motivation. It's what is supposed to make the player care about what happens to the characters. If the player doesn't give a shit about what happens next it's unlikely that they will continue playing.
Just look at Fire Emblem Fates.

I don't like a lot of plot-heavy games nowadays mainly because they don't give you meaningful choices that end up influencing the game. Give me a well written game where I can actually change the outcome of the story with my choices as a player and I will eat that shit up.

I agree, story can be fun but gameplay is the most important aspect of a game.

Doesn't apply to walking sims, visual novels and all good RPGs

If story is irrelevant why include them anyways?

Different media have different tools available to them to keep a consumer entertained.
>books have the ability to tell stories with almost no limitations beyond the skill of the author
>movies have visuals, sound, and the ability to tell a short, concise story
>tv shows have the ability to tell much longer stories than movies, but usually lack the budget to do as impressive visuals and sounds
>video games can do everything a tv show, book, or movie can do, while also having player interactivity
Video games can use interactivity and only interactivity and still be entertaining (see games like Tetris), or they can take and pull in other elements. A game like Final Fantasy 4 uses a combination of all four to present an entertaining game. So it's not that story is irrelevant, it's that story is an optional tool that the developer can choose to use or not.

True, but a good story never hurts a good game,

Story has always been a very important part of RPGs

of course not. that is just nonsense.
a game, despite being fundamentally about gameplay can very much be built around a story or heavily incorporate it into its gameplay thematics.

stories are certainly the part that a game is ultimately the weakest in, since gaming is objectively the worst medium for storytelling.
gaming has too many distractions. books and movies, each in their own way, can focus the audience exactly on what they want and tell their stories without any delay.

games on the other hand are full of distractions, ranging from menus, inventory management up to player actions that aren't conform with the story or theme.

BUT games are the best medium to experience a setting or theme a story has set up. they're just not the best for TELLING it, but the story is still important for the experience.

and even then, a good RPG is gameplay focused with minimal story
