I disagree, though it should be secondary - or if you're making a game where story is a big element make it tie into the game world/gameplay seamlessly like Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Metroid Prime, Undertale, etc.

As much as I adhere to the "gameplay is more important than story" ethos overall, I refuse to be baited into thinking that only one approach to vidya design can be right. That's just dumb.
