True enough. There's definitely less roleplaying than there was. My main beef with Skyrim compared to Morrowind, Daggerfall, etc, is the fact that your choices don't really matter. Like yeah, there's the arbitrary decisions between Stormclocks/Imperials. But you can't just murder plot characters and destroy the story like you could before, which I thought was really liberating in it's own broken way.

Sometimes a game's problems are not apparent until the novelty of the game itself wears off. It's initial success doesn't always tell us how good a game is (remember marketing and hype).

ESO's basic gameplay shits on anything even a modded Skyrim can offer. This singlehandedly makes it superior.
Then there's better dialogues, storytelling, questing, RPG mechanics, and variety out the ass. It's better than WoW BFA and FFXIV as an MMORPG; not like that's an accomplishment these days, but still.

Don't get me wrong I'm gonna shit on Bethesda every opportunity I get because they are awful developers who hate their fans and paying customers. But unfortunately they are also the only ones making games with this particular framework and the framework is fucking amazing.

Modded Skyrim makes it a neat "fantasy life simulator" but at the end of the day, the quest lines are short, have very little player choice, and you just end up not having anything left to do in an instant and at that point you're also practically a God so there's no difficulty and there's not really content in the game one can clear for the sake of completion. Hell even the 200 or whatever dungeons all feel copy pasted and everything in them respawn so you exploring that type of content is meaningless.

That's why I dislike it.

But the whole idea of, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone, is what keeps drawing me back in. That and the feeling that it's a "real" world where time passes and people do stuff with or without your involvement. I got my entry into the series with Oblivion, and it was fucking magical.

But when Skyrim came out, the magic was gone. I knew the limitations now. But I still want that magical feeling back. Mods keep pushing those limits further. And so my hours in this hell that Todd has created keep increasing every few months.

To me the quests are really Skyrim's biggest issue. They were kinda fun to do once, but once you start replaying stuff it's just fucking painful having to sit through their awful static wonky "cinematics" and dialog written by someone who isn't human over and over again. Every time I replay I do less and less quests because I can't stand them, and just run through more and more random dungeons, which makes me just get bored of the game quicker and quicker.

It kinda goes to show just how much more tolerable their games would have been if they hired some actual writers and character designs like in New Vegas. Or just made quests less annoying like in Morrowind.

Keep the quest story concise and focus on the actual gameplay portion, standing next to someone while they drone on about something for 5 minutes is not fun in a game that is not inherently cinematic. That stuff only works in games like RDR or Witcher 3.

Yes. Ultima 3 was worse and I have over 36 hours in it, completed all endings in Drakengard just to show myself I could do it, dropped Persona 4 at about 40 hours and I have 2620 hours in War Thunder despite hating that game more than anything else.

My primary issue with Skyrim is that it's just too fucking small. You could explore every inch of the map in under an hour. Final Fantasy 12, for example, felt bigger, and it's a much older game. World of Warcraft is many, many times bigger. It kind of kills the immersion when all of the "big" hubs aren't even the size of a fucking mall.

30ish minutes on a pirated copy. Game was boring as all hell, with no signs of it getting any better. There were so many better open world RPGs even when it came out.

This is objectively the worst realization I ever had in a game. There is nothing close to the feeling of playing your first Elder Scrolls game for the very first time. Ywn spend literal hours picking flowers and catching bugs to figure out how to make the most effective potions after your first play through. You can never explore the Dwemer ruins or complete the guild questlines and be genuinely surprised by what you see or find. You don't even get the steady increase in power every RPG gives because you already know where to find the high-end equipment and all the ways to grind to the higher levels in the early game.

This but with VR. I've played it before near release and now in VR it feels like a brand new game, especially with all the new mods.
Exploring caves but needing to actually use torches/magic to see, talking to NPCs in face-to-face, sneaking around and slitting throats, fucking horses, and hiding behind a ward as a dragon breaths fire

I still remember the first time I played Morrowind close to when it was released. I got lost for like two hours until I eventually found my way back to a populated area. It gave me thrills.

It's still a heavily flawed game, but for the most part I agree. I couldn't even get into BoTW nearly as much as my friends because I just kept feeling it was a much emptier experience than exploring Skyrim. The wealth of quests, lore, powers and treasure to find in Skyrim was just far more interesting than BoTW or other open world RPGs I've played since.

I pirated the VR version, and I cannot go back to SE now. Skyrim is bland as fuck, but it's at least a game, compared to most other VR shit out there.

I busted 200 hours into skyrim before january 2012 and I hate it. I spent 50 hours rushing all the quests and exploring, being severely disappointed there wasnt a single piece of good content, then another 150 trying to mod it to enjoyment. It was fucking horrible.

SSE /just/ got SKSE support like last week. Most of the big mods are ported over. It is definitively the more stable.

LE still has better mod support across the board including grafix and lewd stuff.

SSE if you just want to play the game. LE for elusively screenshots and porn.

What are the essential mods, best ENB, and good face presets? I spent hours looking through Nexus doing this before but I'm curious what other people think

Because there’s potential in there. You can just feel the game it could have been sometimes, but then you start to see the strings and Bethesda’s terrible design/QA becomes too grating

ENB is subjective. There are no good face presets either spend hours in RaceMenu getting it just right.

I could make a really long list of problems with Skyrim, but yes; that and the fact that instances/dungeons also have conveniently placed quick exits, as if they were all designed for the player in mind, not designed for their own function.

That's the biggest bullshit and the reason I haven't gone back to it. I usually only use very basic mods so having to run a whole separate .dll or whatever just for some QoL improvements is stupid.

There's a million reasons for save file corruption. Read the readmes and modpage before uninstalling mods willy nilly.

No, I'm talking about locking achievements and shit. Normally all I do is add hairstyles, a mod to drop your empty hand from view and a mod to make circlers equippable with hoods. The fact that I need to run a separate app just for full functionality for such basic mods is fucking bullshit and feels intended to push their own store.

I recommend Touring Carriages for real carriage rides. SWIFT for more immersive fast travel using ONLY Falmer wayshrines and boats along the river and coasts. Also Simple Horse is the best horse mod.

I hate Skyrim because the base game was total dogshit.

Mods made the fucking game what it is and mods made the memories we all have of a more balanced world and/or just the titties and skimpy armor/clothing. I do not remember my first playthrough at fucking all but I remember searching for mods, installing and replaying the game

Even some retardedly small but super fucking amazing mod like "unarmed helper" really gives you opportunity to enjoy something you never played before. Never played a Kahjiit in fucking EVER until this mod and yeah a light armor, fist/claw catgirl fucking shit up. and yeah, catgirl mod. a more toned imperial with ears. And remember base vampires with their poorly scaling shit? a mod can fix that and wow vampire lords are fun when you are not whittling away HP bars for 10 minutes per fight

Not even progen. It's literally random. Sometimes the game makes dungeons you can't even complete, which makes fighters/mages guild quests impossible to finish. It's rare, but you need to get into the habit of saving before accepting literally every quest so that you can reload in case it happens to you.

Also Arena is dogshit. Even though Daggerfall is buggy and unnecessarily large, it's superior to Arena in every other way.
