WoW is at fault.
It got popular due to the biggest mmo advertising campaign ever, and all the suits decided to just try and copy it.
This created a series of WoW clones over a long enough time that between WoW and its clones most of the mmo playerbase was introduced to wow-like games and took many of the wow specific mechanics and features to simply be universal elements of the mmo genre.
This caused many pre-existing games to try and adopt wow-like elements to appease the wow players who, trying them out between expansions (the very fact that wow always lost players between expansions proves its not really very good) demanded more wow like features.

So with nothing but wow clones being made, and all older mmos getting wow-isized, it was over. mmos are finished.

Now all we have is stuf locked in by wow, and a hand full of gimmicky predatory games trying to profit off of nostalgia, but those will always be shit, because the things that made early mmos good were not the most memerable mechanics. All the 'old school' mmos are still essentually wow at heart, with some gimmick people remember from older games pasted on top of it.

I played a troll tank on Nost, berserking is not nearly as good as minmaxers make it out to be, or as easy to use. Trying to pop it effectively during damage spikes is hard when you're trying to build threat and position bosses. And even if you do pop it perfectly, it's 10s of haste on a 3 minute cooldown

30% x 0.4 (avg. white damage %) = 12 x (10/180 = 5.56%) = 0.667% increase to dps over the course of a 3 minute fight. at optimum usage on every CD

In vanilla? Ret was kinda garbage. For PVP and even for leveling you were better off going for Reckoning which was pretty far down Prot.

The single most important thing in classic is picking the race and class you like.

Ignore metas, ignore raids, ignore minmaxers.

Mage will give you the best results overall, but rogue is a good alternative if you want instant power in PvP.

Berserking is good for Resto, since Blood Fury is useless for casters in Vanilla anyways, but overall yeah Orc's stun resist is pretty busted.

I didn't get to play WoW classic much, think I finally got it about four months before the BC expansion hit. Then started using private servers with vanilla presets to get the nostalgia again. If you time it perfectly you can use Vanish to avoid taking hits in some cases because the game decided that you couldn't be targeted by a spell that triggered in the same batch as your Vanish.

I tried playing with an undead priest, but during the tutorial area I just got fed up with slowly killing boring trash mobs and generally doing the same crap every other mmo has done (and done better, in some cases) in a desolate, lifeless zone with nobody around. I made it as far as that pumpkin patch in the necropolis before quitting. I could probably get past that stuff if there's a community to at least talk to while I grind, though.

classic is basically the same but you actually have to pay attention while killing mobs since you cant take more than 2 at once without dying. if you played at launch there would be plenty of people to talk to. leveling is a much, much more social experience in classic which makes it 10x better even though its the same grind

The only late game professions that matter are herb and alch. If you take anything but, you're not making shit for money. Low level ore is more expensive than high level ore, but so spread out it's still not worth the farming effort.

Helps that vanilla gives you good reason to actually group up due to the relative strength of random mobs and the greater prevalence of group quests (that usually have good shit like Rune of the Guard Captain, or at least a ton of EXP along the way)

Let me tell you a secret, user. In ANY game with pvp, if there is a character or an item that enables invisibility, that character/item will always completely wreck scrubs, because scrubs cannot deal with anything they cannot directly see.

They're still good, but with everyone having perfect everything with usually broken trinkets on private servers, the tides changed. Take a look at Linken's and Tidal Charm on private servers and you can easily tell why the meta changed.

To put it bluntly, very good rogues are scary, so scary that everyone wants to be like them. You get an influx of brainlet, keyboard turning rogues, and then it appears as if all rogues are straight garbage. Doesn't help that the class has numerous "Uh oh" buttons as a crutch: Vanish, Blind, Evasion, and Sprint. Whereas the expert rogue makes calculated use of all these tools to what appears to be over-powered effect; the complete novice pops them all as quickly as possible and then promptly dies.

That's because Blizz learned from their mistake with Cata since everyone hated what they did to Vanilla zones. It's part of why they're backpedaling with the upcoming Vanilla servers.

The second tier was a massive step up and IIRC, Ulduar was the last raid the "core" old wow team created.

Then toc came in and very quickly made ulduar irrelevant, on top of that it adds a shitty dungeon that is massively overtuned for its difficulty.
Then icc comes in and it's more of a mixed bag, LK is one of the best bosses but you also have a bunch of snorefests, great boses and some meh bosses

wrath also really didn't had much content, everyone afked on dalaran and were so fucking bored you could always see a mammoth train while they waited for dungeon finder or the weekly boss kill.
People are so quick to be nostalgic about wrath but it was such a shitty expansion sans a very few amount of good things.

By that time I was deep into actually having a social life as well, so the lesser amount of content and more casual atmosphere allowed me to keep up. I never quite liked it, but it still had its ups. My server has a pretty active World pvp scene around the daily centers, so I never got so bored I sat in town. I remember the hype for it though coming off of TBC. It felt like more people were hyped for Northrend than Outlands and all of their failed promises.

What made vanilla so great is the same thing that made Runescape great or Ultima great. It started off small, Richard Garriet, Andrew Gower, the vanilla dev team. Just a couple of white/asian nerdy guys sitting around who played too much DND. Spend a ton of time theorycrafting and putting together a thematically consistent product.

Then success comes and all the corporate HR bullshit, gotta stuff a bunch of neon haired leftists in. Yes this is related to video games, it's not a /pol/ fantasy. Its sadly reality. When something is successful and a corporation decides it can milk it for money, thats when the original guys either get bought out or pushed out and the product invariably dies a slow death.

The teams get bigger, the corporate suits only care about profit and don't understand anything about what makes the games enjoyable. The new hires HR brings in dont understand anything and make shitty, retarded art and designs. Its just a shitshow all around.

Wrath had the best class design, the best PvP balance (sans Death Knights), and motherfucking Wintergrasp. It was the best time to PvP in WoW. The raids weren't great aside from Ulduar, but only carebears give a shit about that.

Most fun Rogue expansion hands down too. Shadowdance skill cap was amazing.

Literally only one issue with Classic.

Well the easiest thing to do is to be *that* rogue: Pick fights you know you'll win, avoid those you lose. Because of Vanish, evasion, and sprint you have a good deal of options to engage or avoid with.
As for being actually good? Lots of practice dueling, wPvPing and BGing. When you see another faction member out in the world, you have instantly know what you're going to do. Know their class, and how you match up against them, if they're mage they're going to X so I will be ready to Y. Get addons, especially the energy replenish one, don't be a clicker, get a good system of 20+ keybinds that work for you. When all else fails, Gnomish Death Ray.

I'd be more interested in this if they confirmed it would be almost like a reset or AU with different xpacs and content. While there's a lot of content it's kind of early concept of timegated since even leveling takes forever but after a while T3 and Naxx will be released and then what? Everyone just RPs all day? I mean there is a literal finite amount of content for classic

know when to use your cooldowns. rogues have extremely powerful tools with vanish, cold blood, blind, adrenaline rush, sprint, evasion, and preparation. the key is not wasting them. it's very tempting to pop everything just to shit on one guy, but then you're completely useless if just one more person shows up since you'll have nothing left and just have to run away like a little bitch.

also know when to run away like a little bitch. you're a dick ass thief, not rambo. the entire class is built around the idea of being selective with the fights you pick.

know when and how to properly restealth. dots tick regularly, so if you time your stealth/vanish correctly you can stealth and reopen on your target in between dot ticks. it takes 6 seconds of dealing or receiving no hostile actions for combat to end, and stealth can only be used out of combat. learn when you can 1v1 someone in a single opener and when you need to stun them and run away to get a restealth for a second one.

learn energy management. it's a rather unique resource compared to most other classes and takes some getting used to. get an energy tracking addon, these help immensely. this also requires planning ahead and knowing your combo point generators/spender costs like the back of your hand so you know when to spend energy to build combo points or cc your target and when to pool it so you can prepare for a burst damage window.

know how enemies will react to your spells so you can play around it or mindgame them. a mage will almost always blink your cheap shots and ice block your blinds. a warrior will almost always demo shout/piercing howl and a hunter will always flare right after you vanish. another rogue will almost always try to gouge you immediately after your stun on them ends. this will take time though so you just gotta play the game and see how other people play.
