Everything went to shit after the golden age that was early WoW and C4 Lineage 2. The two greatest MMOs of all time.
I've played all of the ones that came afterwards from Rift to Black Desert. They're all hot fucking garbage. Classic will save us from this misery.

WoW is at fault.
It got popular due to the biggest mmo advertising campaign ever, and all the suits decided to just try and copy it.
This created a series of WoW clones over a long enough time that between WoW and its clones most of the mmo playerbase was introduced to wow-like games and took many of the wow specific mechanics and features to simply be universal elements of the mmo genre.
This caused many pre-existing games to try and adopt wow-like elements to appease the wow players who, trying them out between expansions (the very fact that wow always lost players between expansions proves its not really very good) demanded more wow like features.
So with nothing but wow clones being made, and all older mmos getting wow-isized, it was over. mmos are finished.
Now all we have is stuf locked in by wow, and a hand full of gimmicky predatory games trying to profit off of nostalgia, but those will always be shit, because the things that made early mmos good were not the most memerable mechanics. All the 'old school' mmos are still essentually wow at heart, with some gimmick people remember from older games pasted on top of it.
