the base game is kinda shit, the story and leveling isn't too good. the two expansions however are pretty dang good, but obviously you have to pay for them. it's definitely worth a try though, some stuff like pvp and wvw are gonna be fun even on f2p accounts

You still have to pay for the expansions, and if you're a f2p player there are limitations on your account, especially the earliest levels (to prevent botting spammers). It's still playable though.
Also, necromancer is not very good in GW2. It has a poor moveset and it's nowhere near its GW1 counterpart.

gw2 is f2p but you pay for the expansions while ff14 lets you get to lvl 30 in every class and then asks for money

Guild Wars 2 will be the better experience if you just want to try the genre out and don't plan to stick with it.
FFXIV needs you to stick with it especially in its current state since the 1-50 leveling experience is awful thanks to the skill crunch in the latest expansion.

GW2 was pretty fun. I like a lot of open world activities anyone can join in on and there is always something going on.
I just tried to get into FFXIV, holy shit it’s so boring. 20hours in and all I’ve done are fetch quests or kill X amounts of Y monsters. Story is unengaging too
