At least before there was some plot intrigue and Machiavellianism. That episode was supposed to be heralded as some huge achievement but it was just a dark, blurry, bloated mess. Everything that took place just seemed like random plot devices. Why would the ice king die so easily? It reminds me of the 3rd Hobbit movie when the Smaug is just killed in the first 5 minutes to move the plot along.

I haven't watched that show, or many miniseries, but that format is probably fine. I enjoyed Deadwood which only had 3 seasons, but even in such a short period the 3rd season was of lesser quality. A show also often needs to be "broken in" for a few episodes as well in order for the writers to find their footing most of the time, whereas an excellent film is usually better mapped out and more pristine in terms of writing.

also one think I don't understand, you take out a dragon and wipe out a small fleet in seconds, but don't bother to capture/finish off the marooned idiots, except for this one conveniently captured character that is due removal

Nah, I'll give the show credit until this season because at least it was moving towards something and had some substance: winter, bad guys, unbeatable monsters coming. The characters WERE developing towards something. The fact that they were able to resolve 7 seasons worth of storyline in one episode, and now have all the characters just leaving each other again (and "not coming back") is why there is so fucking little left to develop in this season. There is literally nothing left interesting.

While seasons 5 and 6 were still somewhat watchable they don't match the earlier ones in quality and the seeds for why the quality has plummeted in later seasons were planted in those seasons.

Now they could've just marched down south and placed loyal men to all the castles and sieged Kings Landing. If Griff was in play they'd have a young well loved king against them that you can't just kill and be done with because everyone loves him and they'd hate you for killing him.
