I can’t even start learning how to play because I don’t know what to set the knobs at.
What should my guitar tone and vol knob be at? What should the amp volume and master volume be at?(What’s the difference?) What about gain/treble/bass?
Also I notice the amp hums a lot if my phone is anywhere near the guitar lol but otherwise it’s quiet hum
Ian Ward
Was that you singin, user? This is actually good.
Henry Richardson
Theyre just about done now. Id say at least 2 months is a good guess. I put them on all my electrics now. But i rotate through them and i live in a semi arid area so they dont rust up so fast. I also leave my guitars outside sometimes overnight. I was always a daddario user but the nyxls blow the regular ones out of the water. Very good for more aggressive playing like bends and such
Turn up your rectifier. This is why Mesa uses 2 or three. Is it really that hard? If you don't balance your guitar and amp tone controls then everyone will know you're a bedroom guitarist.

Cool. I 'm thinking it might be worth paying up for the more expensive strings just so I'm not changing them as often. SEems like the extra tuning stability is worth it also

>What should my guitar tone and vol knob be at? 10 and 10, respectively. >What should the amp volume and master volume be at?(What’s the difference?) The volume probably the preamp volume, which can have a strong effect on how distorted your guitar sounds. Set it to where you like the tone of the guitar. The master volume level is the master volume level. It's how loud your guitar will sound. Try to set it loud enough so you can hear it, but not so loud that you hurt your ears. >What about gain/treble/bass? Set them to 6, 6, and 6, respectively.

Brody Harris

Brayden Gonzalez
No. An attenuator attenuates the signal going to the speaker so you can keep the signal the same but lower the actual volume you get out of the amp. In some cases though it sucks the tone. You're better off just getting an amp that has a better volume control/circuit that breaks up at lower volumes and doesn't need to be cranked
Lincoln Reyes
>Want a second guitar to complement it thats how everyone GAS starts
Benjamin Lee
No.
Master Volume affects the signal going into the power amp. An attenuator affects the signal coming out of the power amp.
The Master Volume control not only controls the volume of the amp, but the amount of power tube saturation. Raising the volume adds more sustain and low end to the sound.
The attenuator is used to get that cranked amp sound at a lower volume. YMMV on how effective they actually are.
Colton Howard
Yes, they both attenuate the signal.
Nathaniel Miller
And what do the volume and master volume control do then, if not that what you described?
Well the master is what you need to drive the power amp harder, i.e. getting the power tube saturation happening on most amps. However, some circuits are different. A lot of higher end amps hit the power stage differently and at much lower volumes. It all depends on the design. The volume is usually just the channels volume but the actual output will be determined by what you set the master at. Attenautors are most useful for non-MV amps like the original Plexis and stuff
Jackson Long
No thats just you . I have it in my dean. Im happy with how it sounds actually the alnico 2 shawbucker is nice. I want to keep it like that. But when i get my charvel im going to throw the seymour duncans it comes with into the trash and maybe put a dimarzio transition set into it. But some suhrs would be nice in it too. I still have my chink dean that needs a set of pups so Idk.
What kind of music do you like? Almost everything has a bass part even if it wasn't recorded with or written for a bass guitar. Try downloading guitar pro files for some song, open with tuxguitar, click on whichever instrument is doing the bass part, start figuring out a bass guitar version from there. Once more comfortable, do your own transcriptions.

Sold my Sub N Up. Not buying any TC stuff anymore... The Ditto was alright though. It's really hard to find honest pedal reviewers out there, nobody ever mentions bad things about the thing they're reviewing. In my case, there was absolutely no resistance to the knobs whatsover and they just rolled about with the slightest bump. The suboctave knob sweep was non-existent, it was practically an on-and-off switch between 10~11 o'clock. Not to mention the high frequency hissing it does from time to time when it's off. I also found the Toneprint app shit to be cumbersome (wtf, I have to pull out my phone to tweak shit?)
Wish I could demo stuff at a guitar store properly but it's just so noisy there it's hard to hear yourself and very difficult to evaluate what you're trying out.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the setup I have. Any other Mustang/Duo Sonic guys here? It's my one and only favorite electric.
I start at E and get it perfect consistently then move to A. Start adjusting A and E goes flat?? Eventually get A and E perfect then try adjusting D, D is perfect but now A and E are flat.
Is this supposed to happen with a normal trem system?
Logan Nelson
It couldnt possibly be a different bass now could it? Your schizophrenia is astounding
Asher Davis
New strings take a little time and stretching to settle in. When you put on new strings, though, make sure you're not leaving the string slack at the bridge end. Also, these tuning problems can crop up if the string is binding at the nut. You might want to put some Nut Sauce, graphite, dry lock lubricant, dry bike chain lubricant...that kind of thing...under the strings at the nut. You want them to be as frictionless as possible there.
Cooper Hughes
If the trem is floating you need to tune it like a Floyd Rose or it will keep going out of tune
Christian Johnson
Thanks guys a no it’s just a strat trem. The strings are new from factory and I’ve going at this bending them for like 30 mins but it’s finally starting to stay in tune and actually doesn’t sound shit.
I’m just kinda stretching them everywhere idk if there is a better way.
Leo Ramirez
Usually you'll have a GAIN and a VOLUME control. In your case, it seems like you have a VOLUME and a MASTER VOLUME instead. They're the same.
Your VOLUME knob controls the preamp gain (i.e.: amount of distortion). The master volume knob controls how loud your guitar is. The thing is, it'll start distorting a bit at higher volumes, like when you turn up the volume knob but to a lesser extent, probably only past 12 o' clock.
an attenuator is a circuit (with its own knob) that you put between the amp and the speakers, to ATTENUATE (reduce) the volume while still keeping that cooked tubes sound from cranking the master volume. That said, amplifiers will always sound better when they're loud, that's because of how your ears work.
Joseph Bennett
yea thats the way to do it, is stretch in all spots. A lot of people don't stretch well/properly
Nathaniel Torres
I stretch your mom properly.
Alexander Edwards
Should be fine if you just want something to practice silently with. I've tried a line 6 pocket pod before and it does the trick, as long as you don't try cranking the distortion, cause it sounds like absolute ass.

For a challenge, try to learn the trumpet(?) solo in the middle of the song on guitar by ear. It's good practice.
Jaxson Campbell
kek not really
Juan Watson
Every musician started as a shit player. For my first year of guitar, I was just playing along with songs that were simple enough to play chords over. ITAOTS is actually a great example of this, and so is House of the Rising Sun. Eventually these chord shapes become second nature and you're able to make the chord shape without even holding a guitar. It just takes time, but anyone can do it. Django Reinhardt had three working fingers on his left hand, which was not his strumming hand. Pretty sure having small hands is something you can overcome.
Elijah Sanchez
I think it's two trumpets
Jose Foster
yeah but actually practice instead of just going through the songs or else youl be a half ass forever
Aaron Flores
Well this is practice, and its meant to cement the chord shapes into your muscle memory. I'm not saying you have to do this for as long as I did, but I'm actually pretty good now. I play improvised jazzy folky shit that wouldn't have been possible without a sturdy foundation.
After you get the low chord shapes down, play the same chord but higher on any given song. For example the C that you're probably playing is x,3,2,0,1,x, but you can also play it as x,3,5,5,5,3. There are typically three different pitches of any given major or minor chord that you'll play on guitar unless you have a longer neck, so try to learn all three of each major and minor chord.
And here's a link to a chord designer to figure out what chord you're playing chorderator.com/designer/
Parker Lopez
it can be more entertainment than practice
Wyatt Moore
What are good uses of the pinky for fingerpicking
Colton Kelly
I wildly disagree with this. In the very beginning, playing your instrument at all is practice. Regardless though, practice should more often than not be entertaining unless you are a musician by trade and have a gig.
Having a basic ass song to guide your three a four chord change over and over is a fantastic way to start guitar. After a while, the chords will be ingrained into your muscle memory. After only focusing on chords for my first year, I can now play any chord with my fingers in the air, whether it be major, minor, 7th, diminished, suspended, and so forth. Albeit, probably about 50% of that time was just looking up new chords to learn like an autist, but I actually spent a lot of time playing along with Jeff Mangum.
In the chord generator that I linked, on the left hand side there are two options that say Capo Fret and Alt Chords. If you want a higher chord like I was saying about the C chord before, just move the capo up, and if you want more versions of the same chord, use the alt chord option. I set the link up so that it always links to G major, meaning that if you use any of the chords on the screen they should sound relatively fine, other than the diminished F#. Just ignore diminished chords for now honestly.
It depends. Some people like to have a finger to each string, while the thumb deals with the E and A strings, however I've always found this was completely unnecessary. I'll usually use three fingers and I get way more than enough speed out of that than I'll literally ever need, and I very rarely find myself wanting to pluck more than three strings at a time. I can't think of a single instance when I needed to use my pinky.
Cooper Bailey
I've sunk more time into playing guitar than literally anything else in my life, and if I can help someone learn about it in my free time I will.
Jason Martinez
for years i went just by learning others' songs and playing along, only actually practiced solos and licks. i went by fine and could play well with bands
then i thought hmm my playing isnt too tight i need to work on the basics then i realized there mistakes on my chords shapes, my timing was loose etc
but yeah it kept me playing.
Adam James
lmao you're not helping anybody, do you know where you are?
Ryder Sanchez
I've been thinking one thing about it. I read that not using the pinky to hold a beer or a glass makes you look more attractive to women because subconsciously it looks like you're in control and chill, instead of holding the beer desperately with all your fingers.
But then with guitar, using all your fingers can be impressive for some.
I myself was more into the 3 finger bluesrock players of the 70s when I started.
Brody Moore
Well when you're playing guitar, it shouldn't be to impress others in my opinion. From what I can tell, there is actually not reason to play a six string instrument with more than 3 fingers. If you really want to go fast, learn to alternative pick with each finger.
The best way to avoid loose timing is to count along with the music you're playing to early on, and when you're playing without music to use a metronome. I feel like there have been thousands on thousands of potentially amazing guitar players out there that never got past the amateur phase because they got bored of the initial monotony, so playing along is very important in my eyes. It will also teach your rhythms that will subconsciously help you out in the long run.
Christian Roberts
yes playing along is important indeed but one should practice the basics along with it. i didnt learn to count from the start because i read on the internet that i can get away with it if i can play along to songs. improvising more often than not felt like walking on the dark because i didnt have a clue about time divisions.
Levi Garcia
And yet again none have proven to be a better player than him. jcum is far from great but the aforementioned fact alone leads me to believe we've got some serious shitters here in /gg/.
Scale lenght, google it. Anyone can become a great player. Don't worry about sucking; once you become competent you'll discover just how much you suck and that's a good thing.
>so try to learn all three of each major and minor chord.
You talk about fundamentals but that's not how you learn the fundamentals. Practice the major scale until you see it in your dreams. Practice it in every possible way, in every possible key in every possible position. Learn to play every triad in it, in every key in every position. Know the names of every note in every key. Know every note in every triad. Extend the triad to include 7ths and know every note. Do this with the natural minor scale. Great. Now the harmonic, now the harmonic minor, now the melodic, the bebop scale, the blues scale, altered scales, pentatonic scales. This is the kind of foundation which enables you do actually play and understand music. Throw in a bit of theory and, to the average joe, you're a musical wizard who modulates, reharmonizes and embelishes any chord progression on the fly. A few hours of focused practice a day and you'll be there within a year.
Colton Perez
I'm talking the fundamentals of fundamentals here though. Most beginners do not want to learn scales, and most people don't care to even learn anything of value in the first year or so. While you are right, those are the fundamentals that will get you places, its just not realistic.

most people are unironically too stupid to enjoy good music. humans only enjoy music if they can pick out the patterns in it and predict what comes next, which is why the most popular songs are the same shit over and over again. you get a dopamine rush from it. it's like simulated problem solving. a chord progression resolves, you go "i knew that would happen!" and feel good. smart people can enjoy basic "bad" music but dumb people can't go the other way.

Anyone hear anything about these amps? Thinking of getting it since I want to get back into playing after a few years and need something for apartment and moving around. Watching some demo videos they actually sound pretty good especially for the price.
I visited a few guitar forums before and it's absolutely mindboggling how many boomers talk about getting a new guitar for what feels like no reason at all. The weirdest part is the fact that no guitar can be played as is, the nut has to be replaced always, it always has to be refretted and it always needs new pickups. After that comes a joke about their wife complaining about this mental illness tier collecting shit. These guitars will never be played and they know it. People like that only like the idea of themselves playing guitar.
Austin Phillips
>demo videos
so they sound good with compressed low quality audio that's probably been mastered on top of it all? also can't forget the demo guitar, and the demo player.
try one in person with your own guitar before you waste 1/10 of a gibson's pricetag

Yeah sure I'll just check it out in person when no store IRL has one in a driving range because they recently just came to the US. Also not the official gear demo video I mean multiple sources of people testing them.

Marshall MG30FX
I went through a love, hate, love relationship with the thing. At first I liked it because it was my first amp, was decently loud, and had built-in effects. Then I learned about tube vs. solid state and began to think I was above using it.
Eventually I came back around when I brought it to college (my other amps were too big) and dialed in a decent tone on it for one of my bandmates. Now I have it on top of a half stack bass amp and play through both together. It actually sounds nice - the Marshall has the highs and high mids while the bass amp fills out the lows and low mids.
Justin Rodriguez

theres a lot of mythology and memes that get ciriculated a lot online... and nobody ever cares to debunk them even though they're demonstrably bullshit, or at least outdated >the guitars shape or wood affects the sound >you can only play X genre with X pickups >if you arent sure what to get, just research what your favorite guitarist plays nobody ever says "well if all this shit affects the sound, couldn't I just customize it with a decent amp"? amps overall are under explained in these vids. guitar advice for a beginner could be summed up as "research what pickups you want, buy it in person, and get a good amp".

guitar construction, but not shape, will slightly affect sound wood will slightly affect sound but how is unpredictable, you have to play the things. asking "mahogany, for warm tone!" won't work.
ultimately, different guitars sound different, even within the same make and model.
X genre without X pickups won't sound like X genre.
most amps don't have active EQ and not only do EQ pedals suck dick (get a real mixer for trying to make the darkest sounding LP in the world do strat tones), but your average guitar pickup is a high impedance dinosaur device with a very narrow frequency response so there's not much there to EQ in the first place and there's a lot of signal loss before it hits the mixer.

Nice one Jim. Marshall and Fender are all ya need. Back in the day we used to call people with other amps fags. We oughta bring that back. I've had damn near enough of these kids with their "boogie" and nazi "engl" heads. They sound like sh*t!

I like to take the basic 1 2 3 (notes on the string) pattern going up and down and just change the order
So a 1 2 3 in G would be D|-----------------2-4-5- (etc) A|---------2-3-5--------- E|-2-3-5-----------------
Just change it around to 2 1 3 D|-----------------4-2-5- A|---------3-2-5--------- E|-3-2-5-----------------
And then you can also do 3 1 2 and 1 3 2
basic but changes up the vibe a lot if you're spamming scales
standard is ADGCEA (standard guitar 5 semitones up) which is an ukulele with an extra D and A on bottom two strings but you can just tune it 5 semitones lower and it's the same as a guitar
