Moo, give me some essential country. Entry level and obscure is both good, I prefer both.

All you need is cash. Check out some of the bigger names from Nashville too. Watch some documentaries about them or read a book about them or something; don't ask fucking moo we have shit taste in country and everything else.
Listen to some Gram Parsons, both his solo stuff and his albums with the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Thanks bro
John Prine - s/t
Jerry Lee Lewis had a big comeback as a country singer in the 70s and just knocks it out of the park as a vocalist. Definitely one of my favorite voices in country, even if he's still usually considered a rocker.

By the way, have you ever seen Mike Judge's Tales from the Tour Bus? Season One's all about the back stories of several major country singers, with due emphasis on all the crazier parts. That'd probably give you a pretty damn good introduction to country music.

I am not that into country but this is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Ernest Tubb.
George Jones.
Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, that's about it for the big names, most are so hit and miss they aren't wort getting into individually
Townes Van Zandt - Rearview Mirror
Sturgill Simpson Metamodern Sounds in Country Music
Colter Wall
Garth Brooks
John Prine
The only good mainstream modern country artists are Kacey musgraves and Chris Stapleton
second George Jones, recommend starting with pic related
the Townes Van Zandt self-titled is great for entry
George Straight - Amarillo By Morning
Brooks and Dunn - My Maria
Copperhead Road
Conway Twitty - Hello Darling
Townes Van Zandt- Waiting Around To Die
The Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Trampled By Turtles - Wait So Long
The Dead South - In Hell I'll Be In Good Company
Hank williams! Ramblin Man is a good album
Lost Highway is a good song
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Great country band from the 90s, very rooted in a classic sound and they don't fall prey to the mainstream.

CCR - Cotton Fields
Kenny Rogers - Long Arm of the Law

Let's get some gothic country in here, boys.
16 horsepower - Haw

for some reason, this music is big in europe. look at the comments
Listen to the older stuff. Only good new stuff is Chris Stapleton
John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads
Tim McGraw - Don't Take The Girl
Ryan Adams - Shining Through The Dark
I wouldn't disregard *all* of it.. check out David Cobb's compilation album (titled "Southern Family") as well as Lucinda Williams
stuff (granted, she's been making music from the 1980s and never fell off)
But yes, most modern country is absolute horseshit compared to the older country music. There are some examples of good "modern" country music but it's rare
Hank Williams Jr - A Country Boy Can Survive
also see Magnolia Electric Co by Songs: Ohia
those are the two you should listen to if you're really gonna genre tourist it with two albums
The fuck is your problem?
not the guy you're replying to but it makes more sense to compile a bunch of recommendations into one post rather than a bunch of posts, depending on who you're asking it's kinda spammy
