Nihilism

They're there if you wanna dig into it. The gentle expression of the syllables is all you need to convey the mood.

It's the aesthetic. Shoegaze is usually about the sound that is being produced by the instruments, particularly the guitar. The lyrics are essentially backup, they are not the forefront but add a nice touch. That being said, you still have moments where the vocals can be heard clearly. You have songs like To Here Knows When where you can barely understand anything and you are essentially focusing on the layered guitar and underlying melody, while also having songs like Blown a Wish where you can pretty much clearly understand Bilinda. Loveless a dynamic project in that sense because you can get more layered "wall of noise" songs, and also more dreamier less noisy stuff as well.

The voice can be treated as merely another instrument in the composition of music. If you care so much about lyrics, there is always poetry.

Implying lyrics matter

the melody

because the voice is the most emotive and versatile instrument

It's very beautiful how these abstract unique walls of sound, upon many listens, reveal pop songs hidden beneath the noise. That is honestly my favorite part about this album. I love Souvlaki, but that is pop songs with the instrumental textures in the background. Loveless is line an inverse of that mixing preference.

why don't we ask this question to fucking radiohead

just listen to it without the vocals and you'll understand. Try death grips without the vocals, it sounds like shit, Mc Ride is part of the instrumental.

because loveless is the GOAT album ever and literally every production decision is right on the money.

>Bilinda
even her name is feminine and cute and dreamy wtf.

Butcher has the soothing voice, while Shields has the piercing guitar tones. It's kinda funny.

From a performer's point of view I guess it works in a therapeutic way to find intimacy in what you're singing. You "feel" a song more while singing it (especially when singing the same shit hundreds of times) if there's some personal meaning behind what you're doing over and over.

no one cares, fuck off

Also it makes your vocals sound consistent as opposed to babbling random phonemes which you can't replicate every time

whats the point in having a band name if i cant read it?
