Why would you even think of doing that

I'm not OP but I've recently decided to do the same thing and for the same reason and also because I want to be able to jam with other musicians. What I found out is that it was indeed extremey difficult and I would essentially have to start from zero again. Now I have given up on jazz but still don't want to go back to playing classical like a robot so I decided to focus on practicing improvisation only until I find my own style.
Book tips for OP: How to Improvise by Hal Crook.

Get some fakebooks and learn jazz standards if you know a lot of jazz musicians. If you don't know a few, why would you even want to get into it?

You can improvise in classical music, composers improvised when writing their sonatas, classical era cadenzas were freely improvised etc. Although I don't know why improvising would be so important, it's mostly just repeating tropes that you've learned in different manners, you don't actually ever really freely "improvise".
But I get that you want to jam with others.
This is just nonsense though.

Like I said, I've given up on jazz altogether. I'll still focus on learning improvisation though until a point where I can sit down at the piano and play along with other people and have a good time (not jazz though).

you realize learning to improvise as a jazz pianist will only let you improvise as a jazz pianist right? you won't be able to play shit except trash. enjoy throwing whatever talent you may have into the garbage.

In addition to getting a real/fake book I would suggest simply starting with learning popular songs from chord charts. It’s a simple way to start getting the feel of playing music without being told every note. Also, basic advice but start listening to a bunch of jazz, find what you like and sit with your instrument while you listen. 2, 5, 1.

Wtf I've said twice now that I've given up on the idea of playing jazz. I won't learn jazz godammit, I'll follow through Crook's book and hopefully develop my own style along the way.

Since you want to learn Jazz so bad, why don't you go to a few jazz clubs in your area? Talk to some of the local musicians and see if they can give you some guidance

Follow through several books if you want to develop something unique, not just one book.
