Why would one ever play jazz

becuase improvised music is the highest form of art
its the least abstract in a way
i guess there is improvised music that isnt jazz though

yeah there is, play that instead of jass

Ya Like YYYAAAAAAAAOOOUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUZZZZZ

i mean sure
but jazz is still above any kind of nonimprovised music, at least as far as the importance of the performer goes

learn transcriptions of jazz pianists
probably start with bill evans
and think about the chords that hes using

Literally impossible.

Wrong place to ask bud, 95% of this shit board can't read sheet music

Learn some ragtime
Shit is the bees

Why would you even think of doing that

I'm not OP but I've recently decided to do the same thing and for the same reason and also because I want to be able to jam with other musicians. What I found out is that it was indeed extremey difficult and I would essentially have to start from zero again. Now I have given up on jazz but still don't want to go back to playing classical like a robot so I decided to focus on practicing improvisation only until I find my own style.
Book tips for OP: How to Improvise by Hal Crook.

Get some fakebooks and learn jazz standards if you know a lot of jazz musicians. If you don't know a few, why would you even want to get into it?

You can improvise in classical music, composers improvised when writing their sonatas, classical era cadenzas were freely improvised etc. Although I don't know why improvising would be so important, it's mostly just repeating tropes that you've learned in different manners, you don't actually ever really freely "improvise".
But I get that you want to jam with others.
This is just nonsense though.

Like I said, I've given up on jazz altogether. I'll still focus on learning improvisation though until a point where I can sit down at the piano and play along with other people and have a good time (not jazz though).

you realize learning to improvise as a jazz pianist will only let you improvise as a jazz pianist right? you won't be able to play shit except trash. enjoy throwing whatever talent you may have into the garbage.

In addition to getting a real/fake book I would suggest simply starting with learning popular songs from chord charts. It’s a simple way to start getting the feel of playing music without being told every note. Also, basic advice but start listening to a bunch of jazz, find what you like and sit with your instrument while you listen. 2, 5, 1.

Wtf I've said twice now that I've given up on the idea of playing jazz. I won't learn jazz godammit, I'll follow through Crook's book and hopefully develop my own style along the way.

Since you want to learn Jazz so bad, why don't you go to a few jazz clubs in your area? Talk to some of the local musicians and see if they can give you some guidance

Follow through several books if you want to develop something unique, not just one book.

Lmao
Simultaneously you mean? Got any recs?

No I mean that if you study one book then you play exactly like that book says and it would be difficult to develop your own style; probably not the best thing to do it simultaneously but just study one thing for a while and then move on to the next and you can always come back to the things you've already learned and perfect/change them. Music is a journey that never ends, so enjoy the ride.

>it's mostly just repeating tropes that you've learned in different manners, you don't actually ever really freely "improvise"
that's true of many instruments
but considering the fingering consistency of the trumpet and saxophone, for example, (one fingering per note generally), youre able to eventually connect these fingerings to their respective intervals (at least more efficiently than on other instruments) and so play whatever comes to mind, whether youve practiced it or not

although i imagine its near impossible at fast tempi, but of course they are exceptions, see pic related
