How can I tell if my flac files aren't bad transcodes?

By listening to them? Why are you getting FLAC if you can't tell the difference otherwise?

spectral analysis

in the off chance that one day I can tell the difference.
you can compress down, you can't decompress up.

I thought that only works if it's transcoded from a file that has a frequency cutoff below 22kHz, unless there's another trick I don't know of.

>in the off chance that one day I can tell the difference.
If you can tell the difference you get some new FLAC files for the album on which you could tell the difference. It's not that difficult.

Not reliable.

>It's not that difficult.
this is assuming it will always be as easy to pirate shit as it is now, which I doubt.

If you can't tell the difference between FLAC and MP3 now, I don't think you will be able to ever, so don't bother with FLAC and just get MP3.

Not reliable how

you can transcode something from flac to opus to flac and you will have an almost identical spectrogram.

sounds like a good transcode then

it is, but it will still sound worse if you use it as 40 kbps

why the fuck would i ever do that

you wouldn't, but i could (and I have) when some morons who can't tell the difference ask me for FLAC because "it sounds better", i give them this shitty transcode, and they reply wit "thanks, sounds much better now!".

it's not a shitty transcode by your own admission

it's not shitty, but it will still sounds worse than flac if you use it at 40 kbps

so is it shitty or not shitty? you're asserting both sides

find out for yourself by listening to it

keep organizing your radiohead flacs yikes
