Nu-Metal

I'm genuinely curious, why is Nu-Metal looked at as a joke? People act like it was an awkward phase in music, but it was just music. And there were some indisputable bangers. What's so bad about it?

I don't get the joke either. I think Deftones and SOAD are great bands.

Nothing, it's the only kind of metal that still fills stadiums

The sound is very commercial and MTV/radio-friendly which makes the anger and angst feel plastic and illegitimate. Not that I'm saying you can't enjoy it, just trying to explain why it turns a lot of people off.

Because I think most of the white kids we know today started buying rap and thinking it was the realest thing out there and the michigan and ohio based hatred of the shitty deteriorating system-- the nu-metal movement effectively-- was seen as a planted genre and had no purpose of existing.

Fucking disgusting. I hate music critics, would it kill them to go out to shows and ask people, 'why do you find appeal in this?'

Nu metal is the only tolerable form of metal. But every band is shit in terms of taking their own music seriously.

To be fair, pretty much every nu metal group had incredibly cringey teenage-angst lyrics, so I get why they're such a target. I like a few bands from that scene though.

It was hugely popular and was on MTV a lot and some people hate anything that gets big, so that's one reason.
It was metal, or at least seen by people as a form of metal, so that's another reason. Metal of any form has always been viewed by snobby critics as "white trash" music for angsty teens and nothing more.
Much like the metal and hip hop it took influence from, it was criticized by "progressive" groups for being "anti gay" "anti female" etc etc and in generally overtly "macho" which is never good for those kinds of people, that's another reason
Metal elitists hated it because it was a drastic departure from any traditional form of metal music despite still carrying the label, that's another reason

Nu-Metal had a lot stacked against it, regardless of the hate it still sold a ridiculous amount of albums and was basically the biggest rock movement in America for a while and it's flagship bands are still successful headline acts, so it's really irrelevant how much people hated it.

I mean I can see that with Limp Bizkit and Adema on Immortal, but I never thought it was meant to be taken seriously to be honest

Limp Bizkit are a different thing, they always clearly sounded like they didn't take themselves too seriously, now compare them to stuff like KoRn or Slipknot which was the quintessential angsty mallcore kid soundtrack.
