It really depends on the circumstances.
Self defence in UK law is permitted with "reasonable" force. If someone attacks you then legally you must respond proportionally.
If you reasonably feared for your life (an attacker is armed or states he's armed etc) then you would not be convicted.
Storytime: Around 10-12 years ago in my town an armed man was attempting to break into a flat, which was occupied by a registered shotgun owner. They were acquainted and had some previous dispute. The intruder was a local troublemaker and was known to carry guns. He was shot dead by the occupant. Occupant ended up in court but was acquitted on all charges, because he was defending himself with proportionate force.
But you cannot own anything, guns, knives, bats, anything if your intent is to use it as a weapon. There are legal provisons to own guns, blades and other cool stuff, but only for sporting, utility or collectors purposes.
I don't agree with the law but that's just how it is here.
