Obviously it varies from case to case/the prosecution, but it’ll give you an idea of the legal side of it. Self defence in UK law is permitted with "reasonable" force. If someone attacks you then legally you must respond proportionally.

If you reasonably feared for your life (an attacker is armed or states he's armed etc) then you would not be convicted.
