my degree was in astrophysics focused on the computational/simulation side. The field is in an awful state right now. There are so many astro phds being pumped out and the number of faculty positions at universities is staying pretty much steady. Almost everyone my age that didn't land a faculty position after their first postdoc is jumping ship for industry where we can actually make money and don't have to pack up and move every 2 years doing postdoc after postdoc.

Actually I chose religious studies specifically to work for the Cleveland Diocese, the IBM job came to me because I was a tower foreman for 6 years and have knowledge in logistics and embarkation due to the Marines. I qualified for the job because IBM needs people who understand the religious cultures of foriegn countries due to a rise in resentment to a cubicle lifestyle. Also, to respond to the general notion that software engineering is replaceable, let's get something on the table: the reason a lot of low-skill coding jobs were outsourced to India in the early 90s was because people discovered that web dev wasn't so difficult that you needed to pay someone $2k a week to do it. Software engineering, which requires an extensive knowledge of algos and discrete math, design documentation, scalability, etc are not things your typical self-taught indian dev can do. That isn't going to change twenty years from now. The fact that the hold this opinion goes to show just how little you actually know about software.
