user, getting a dog is like getting a kid. You NEED to take care of it and it NEEDS attention like a kid does. You need to give it a set schedule for when to go out for your dog to pee and poop and you need to commit to daily walks with it outside. If youre up for it then go for it. If you live at home with someone who can help you take care of it go for it. Cats are extremely low maintenance in comparision. You just need kitty litter and food and it essentially takes care of it self.

Get a cat. My friend on voice chat has a dog, his family has conned him into taking care of all their personal dogs and the amount of time he has to spend AFK because of his dogs is pretty obnoxious. Dogs need constant attention or they will kill themselves, they will literally guilt you and it's pretty much just like buying a retarded person. Also, dogs injure themselves and get sick constantly, they will swallow plastic parts like a 3 year old if you don't constantly check what's in their mouth. Also "what's in your mouth?!" becomes the cue for "run away with benny hill music playing just to waste my master's time" horseshit.

If you need to focus on studies or high-skill gaming don't get a dog, if you're a lonely sack of shit that just watches TV in between shifts as a hospital janitor then by all means get yourself a shit-assed bark machine.

It is a matter of how responsible you are and how much an outdoors person you are.

Dogs are a lot of work. Cats basically take care of themselves. Both are nice to have around.

Also dogs force you to be out a lot. Cats are perfect if you want to stay in and cuddle.

Okay, so I used to be a total cat person. Never had dogs, never really wanted one because of the percieved downsides. In addition, all the cats we had were outdoor animals.
Fast forward a few years, my ex gets her mom's dogs because reasons, and we live together, so now I have dogs.
One is a cunt, one is good. Cunt dog is old and soon dies. The good one listens, takes commands, is trainable. No mess in the house, no smell. Have to start walking the dog, which is good for us both. Small dog, but watches the house at night. Sure I have to pick up the shit and buy the shit bags and food and all that, but this thing is now my buddy. Inseparable.
My ex and I break up, the dog goes with me.
I'm a total convert now. I'll never go back to cats. Cats DO smell, and if you keep them inside, your house WILL smell. And not just like cat, like cat shit, doesn't matter what brand of litter you buy.
And the cat doesn't actually care about you beyond your usefulness to it. You feed it, so it's nice.
With dogs, you build a relationship with the specific animal, it becomes part of the family.
Make the right decision, get a dog.

And MAKE SURE you get obedience training and socialize the animal well. No excuse not to.

Don't worry, if i get a a dog, I will train it because my grandma's dog rips arms off on the leash and i don't want that. The dogs I saw online are apparently ok with being with cats and dogs so im ok with this.

I don't like cats. They're destructive, smell bad (the litterbox at least), can't really be trained, and don't provide a ton of companionship.

Dogs have a lot more personality and are more fun to interact with imho. But poorly behaved small dogs fucking suck.

Just get a 20-30lb mutt from the shelter and it'll be the best damn dog you've ever had and probably decently smart too, and it'll live for like 12-15 years.

NONE. That is the only correct answer. Small dogs are either turboniggers on pcp (chihuahuas, terriers, pekingese, papillons etc) or mouthbreathing, slobbering tumors with legs (pugs, bulldogs etc). And cats are literal jews that will shit on everything you love just because they feel like it. You can't keep cats as house pets, it's not worth the effort. At best you can keep them as some low investment farm animal of sorts, to get rid of mice and rats and other pests.

If you've got a cramped space, get a fish tank. Otherwise get a medium or large sized dog.
