After Obama became president, the democratic party reached a wall. They had won the culture war and there was nothing left to do. The issue is that once a party reaches said point, they tend to lose voters rather quickly. This needed to be avoided. And once chaos and confusion happens within a political party, the rational people will lose their control. Populists pop up and offer easy solutions. If you let them control and decide the course, then your party will remain relevant. And out of desperation and to buy more time, they agree. But the issue is that once you go down that path, it's very hard to get go back. Once the extremists have gained more control than the rational people, said party evolves. And the traits that defined them become more extreme. It is a phenomenon which is not exclusive to one side, all political parties are susceptible to this.
