Get a cat or dog. Ferrets and rodents stink like shit all the time, yes even when ferrets are "deglanded". Plus, rodents are just disgusting; they destroy everything they touch...
Birds aren't a terrible option, but they can live for fucking ever, and be very high maintenance and obnoxious. Plus, you're digging in bird shit every day, and that's not good. Cat shit is bad enough in a litter box, but bird shit is just an extra level of gross. Plus, the risk of salmonella and e. coli infection are through the roof with bird shit, just like reptile shit...
Cats or dogs are simple; just a matter of do you want to play with it a lot, how dependent on you can you afford it to be, and do you want it shitting in your yard or a box in the house you gotta clean every few days?

keeps mice and rats down in your area so good if you're in the country. can go away for a night or two by just leaving a heaping pile of dry cat food in it's bowl (cat's will ration out food and can always catch mice/birds if shit gets desperate)

good for security (will generally bark at something moving around or making noise) and loyal companion. cant leave alone in your house for a weekend like with cats (if you leave a pile of food for 2-3 days for them they'll just eat it all in one go) but you can just bring it with you when you go /out/ or whatever so it's not a big deal.

illegal depending where you are, kind of like a better version of a pet rat but they'll get cheeky and climb up your pants

probably the shittiest pet in this list. like the bird but doesnt sing pretty melodies or look cute.

pretty much this, at least with cats you can just have them shit outside. they bury their shit anyway so they're the lowest maintenance of all the pets.
