Wow. I logged on here around 3pm EST and, just like with every other breaking news story since I discovered this place, there were at least a dozen or so threads talking about the Notre Dame fire. And in every single one that I got a chance to peruse, there were some ultra-right-wing Yea Forumsfucktards on here spouting their usual bullshit conspiracy theories about how the fire HAD to be a terrorist attack, that Muslims were ABSOLUTELY involved & that there was NO way it was something as innocuous as a carelessly tossed aside cigarette butt.
As anyone who's been there knows, EVERYONE in Europe smokes & it's allowed EVERYWHERE. That said, there are vastly more people in the US who haven't been to more than 5 states, much less to an entirely different country, than those who have, and smoking is all but banned here. So the vast majority of 'Murrikunz have no idea just how accepted & tolerated smoking is in Europe.
Now, as it pertains to the Notre Dame fire, twelve hours after I logged off:

Wow. Things must have changed then since I was last there. I swear to god, the day I arrived, I hadn't gotten 25 feet past the doorway that leads from Customs to the main lobby/concourse area at Frankfurt International than a German lady asked me if I had a lighter.
Smoking is not allowed everywhere. You cannot smoke in most clubs, or in restaurants or malls. Having said that, there is indeed a lot of smokers, way too many. The streets are filled with cigarettes from morons who cannot put them out anywhere better.
With that said, I do not jump to the idea that it was terrorists. It can be indeed something as simple as someone smoking (even though it would surprise me if that happened in the cathedral)

While I sympathize with the gist of your message, there were easily a dozen threads when I last logged on & I perused 7 of them. I find it just a tad unbelievable that the same 5 people were $p@mming every one of those threads w/ "Kill all the durka durkas" bullshit.

I would have loved my time over there even more than I did if what you say here were true where I was. I never once went to a restaurant, club or bar that didn't have a cloud of smoke hanging in it. I got used to it after a while, but being a non-smoker, it doesn't mean I didn't still notice the shit was there.
