Maybe that happened because i always forced myself to react fast and do most of the fight the samurai way.
Sword Saint's first phase is quick, but it's predictable. Attack, attack, deflect, react to perilous kanji: should get you through this phase
His second phase has erratic slow swings which can be reacted to reflexively. As long as you don't hesitate
Third phase is a victory lap
