NEO TWEWY Secret Report Re-translation

Hey Shi/v/uya, I finished re-translating the NEO Secret Reports in their entirety, with several mistranslations and lore differences noted. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hFoRb2ZHz70TrdBoXNo9PCjSwKXhMp7cnyt_eXOiBjc/ I welcome everyone to have a look at it. If anyone has any questions, comments, or suggestions for better/less awkward wording, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. I'll post a full version of the SR once the proofreading phase is finished.

Thank you based fren

Check out the purple boxes for a quick overview of things that have some differences.

Anything big

Cool

Depends on what you mean by big, but I've marked the major changes in purple.

Your garbage game won't ever be relevant.

I find it hilarious that Mr H thinks he could had set Rindo straight with a 5 minute talk instead of that mess of 3 weeks

Thank god for that, I'm perfectly fine with Square not milking the series any harder than they've already tried to.

TWEWY is a series that needs to watch the world turn and trends change before it can evolve into its next interation.

I was watching this video and two things jumped to mind. One is that I agree that Kano seemed like a better choice for that noise boss and two is some anons though Fret was suspicious in demo days which makes sense considering his design seems to be somewhat based in other angels.

>In one hand Shibuya game is all about self growth, conflict and learning
>Meanwhile Shinjuku game is a glorified battle royale with no intrinsic value
Shinjiniggers deserve the rope

>Shibuya is a teenager city with hobbie stores and fashion trends
>Game is about finding yourself
>Shinjuki is an adult city with night clubs and business
>Game is a pointless competition to stay alive
I think they nailed it pretty fine

Yeah, that’s a pretty good way of looking at it.

>incel rewrite
No thanks

>incel

It’s more so that the real value the Shinjuku games promote is social skills rather than individuality like the Shibuya games. Take note of how Rindo and the others all prevailed due to helping each other overcome their flaws and being open towards one another in comparison to just about every other team.

>Fuya didn’t keep tabs on his team’s mental health which made them easy pickings for Rindo to distract with other duties
>Motoi was straight up willing to abandon his team in order to save his own ass, which led to them abandoning him in return
>Kanon tried to keep her team separate from one another over the fear that the Plague Noise would cause them to attack one another, leading to her being alone when the Plague Noise comes for her

Hanekoma later mentions that Rindo taught him about stuff so he was wrong.

Autism

I watched this video and enjoyed it, I hope we get a sequel or a new story about Tsugumi

Personally, I think that Kariya is an Angel as well.

Having said that, it makes me sad that Square stereotyped my country, I don't know how to feel about it, for once, I love when Japanese portray my country's culture and cuisine but in the other hand, they should chill out with the stereotypes

As a Mexican who loves TWEWY, I hope we get more stuff, I really wish we could get a NEO TWEWY anime

Attached: 1651296105875.jpg (1280x720, 638.16K)

How long are you gonna keep doing this, man?

Doing what?

I think he means posting the same comment with the same image in every Twewy thread about how they stereotyped your country

Thank you based nagichad

Based OP

>NEO TWEWY anime
i would never say another bad thing about square enix ever again
NEO is way more story-dense than the original imo, they'd do NEO a worse disservice if they cut it down to 13 episodes

The whole gang is here! Fuck, I loved those two months of amazing thread after amazing thread back to back,
I have a hard time seeing any threads come close to the level of enjoyment you faggots gave me, I love this game, I love the oc and I love you all

You’re both faggots who are still giving each other (You)s no matter how you format them.

I love you too user.

Nice to see you too, user.

Cocaine's a helluva drug

This is really nice but can I suggest a different rant for panel 6 that actually makes sense?

Kek

Needs more Shoka/Nagi thirst

I could see it pretty easily actually. He single-handedly jumpstarts Neku's arc in a 5 minute convo which was basically wrapped up by the end of Week 1, to the point where Josh stepped in and stressed it as a safety measure, and Neku was measurably more fucked than Rindo was.

fantastic but replace the KH and FFXV with shoka porn posting and something else

>So anyway, this is undeniable proof that joshua can still get with neku and live in a healthy loving relationship

Beautiful

I AM NOT THE PERFECT BOY YOU WANT ME TO BEEEEE

So nothing about saying why Mr Mew got pull into UG? We just gonna assumed Shiki lost Mr Mew when she lost Neku?

Coco stole it.

>the official job is remarkable even though there are some errors, do not use this to defame the NEO localization

Dear OP, your effort is remarkable, I don't agree 100% with you but I can respect that. You're doing this in the first place because you don't think it's perfect and because you don't agree with the particular localization practices in this specific game, but don't want to be the literal translation strawman californian localizers immediately yell about whenever some weeb points out a "joke about capitalism" or whatever.

However even though most people here (except the actual californian localizers in question) agree about the general premise, there's bound to be some disagreements that will just end up badly and you'd stop out of spite or whatever it is. The nature of the discourse is that immature and only recently have we started to see people actually paying to the wording and not just visual fanservice parity (Xenoblade 2 is a good example of a shitty localization they don't care about)

You clearly think it's good but flawed, so I suggest a compromise.

Complete text dump from the files in both Japanese and English, format the lines to a new sheet's page as two columns. A third column for rating the quality for all of the translation:
>5: perfect - wouldn't change one word of it
>4: good - a "good localization" that could be considered 1:1 to the meaning and intent as it is, even though i would translate it differently
>3: acceptable - compromises and light missing information that can be attributed to goodwill, quirky additions or wordings
>2: corporate interference and/or self inserts - aka the usual stuff that would start wars and get translators fired for unprofessionalism in non-vidya translations
>1: sheer incompetence - missing the point, missing text, and anything from (2) that's so badly changed you can't deduce the original
>0: not yet rated

Read all of it and rate away. Only retranslate/comment lines w/ [3] or less. 頑張って。

Are you asking me to rate and retranslate the entire script? I've done a bunch of retranslations of parts of the script as well to clarify things, and I've brought up many of them in these very threads, such as the Nagirl/Boss changes, Joshua's final lines to Neku, the Dissonance Noise/Dissonance Noise mishap, and other such mistranslations. When I ask people not to use this to defame the NEO localization, I am talking about the people who derail NEO and TWEWY threads with tired arguments from people who don't even know Japanese. YES the localisation is flawed and has mistakes. YES I know them. I have been sitting here cataloguing them. I know. I just don't want people to use this as shitpost fuel to ruin even more threads, especially because those threads often devolve into /pol/ shitflinging and people using Google Translate to misunderstand basic wordplay/jokes, instead of talking about ACTUAL mistranslations and their implications on the characters and lore. I am trying to filter disingenous faggots like those, who haven't even played the game and are just twitter dot com warriors looking for games to shitpost about, to steer clear of this project, so that I can talk about actual lore and characterisation changes with genuine fans of the game.

I'm just saying that it doesn't support or even debunked the theory that there two Mr Mew(s).

The devs said themselves its the same Mr. Mew in interviews

>UG Mr Mew = UG Mr Mew
>RG Mr Mew = RG Mr Mew

Thanks user.

Oh shit someone colored this? The artist only did B&W when I saw it

Yeah. Me.
I requested it, so I figured I should color it.

>Are you asking me to rate and retranslate the entire script?
A tall request, but yes, if you so please.

It would be nice to have an objective metric. Something quantifiable. Something with clear translator notes for the stuff that couldn't be communicated (the particles denoting speech patterns, and translator choices in english that tried (or not) to replicate that), the cases where they tried to add an cultural equivalent to a uniquely japanese obscure bit of pop knowledge, what the original text is supposed to be like, something not to second guess the translator just trying to be quirky but actually doing his job after all in that instance. Even something that can be used as an unofficial rewrite mod that updates the translation instead of a "retranslation mod" from scratch that will never be finished and will be discredited by a disproportional focus on how to word things instead of the actual message.

For the entirety of the game, not just the select few lightning rod examples used by keyboard warriors to "own" their enemies. Missing lore doesn't make for good clickbait so it will never be used, although I think the actual cases of corporate meddling and vastly unprofessional localizers need to be pointed out objectively (like the "no glorifying capitalism on my watch", no hope of nuance of discussing that example ever online -agreeing with the why, but not the how- would be ever achieved) As a stranger to this, I played the first one on DS but was actually turned off from trying the second game because it's so apparently flawed *and* because I did take time to sift through other American Square localizations and found them to be very... arbitrary.

This is a already thing in professional translation, the rating and cursory is a "review", before you decide to suggest your own "edits" only for lines that need them. Their ethics team already does a review for "problematic keywords", here yours would be for "missing meaning" in general.

You're based then. Spaghetto has been doing a bunch of really cool Nagi drawings recently, really outdoing himself, and I thought its a shame non of them were colored. Dont blame him tho, thats tiring to do

Holy shit God bless. Any chance a fan patch is working on this too?

I certainly don't mind doing so. Note such a long project will, as you can imagine, take significantly longer than you'd think. The dialogue alone is over 22000 lines in JP; compare that with the Secret Reports I've translated here in terms of length. I will put it on my to-do list, but it will have to wait until I get some other projects out of the way, including the OG SR. I started with the SR due to the lore stuff and it being a relatively contained part of the script. You needn't worry about me quitting something out of spite. I have weaponised my autism to an advanced degree. I did these SR myself because I wanted to, and I'll retranslate the entire script myself if I choose to, even if it takes me years. I just really want to fuck Usui Nagi y'know?
I wouldn't say that my random arbitrary decisions would be "objective" in any way, but quantifiable, sure. I agree with you about pointing out the corporate meddling and such.
>no hope of nuance of discussing that example ever online -agreeing with the why, but not the how- would be ever achieved
Indeed.
The glorifying capitalism line is a great example where I can see why the localization made that choice and I would argue that the actual inclusion of the capitalism aspect is an important part of context-adding to a non-Japanese audience (I can explain what I mean if it's confusing), but the specific wording was done in a needlessly inflammatory way, which leads to much griping.
Having played the game in both JP and EN, I can honestly say that the majority of the script is translated well and in the spirit of the original. The original DS translation also has mistranslations and liberties taken with jokes added, including a line about capitalism. If you liked that one, then I'd pick up this one as well. NEO got more press because people have google translate access now. A lot of the "lightning rod examples" are not even actual examples, but people missing the context or wordplay.

>I just really want to fuck Usui Nagi y'know?
I assume you also have weaponized your autism to write ShoXNagi stuff. Unlimited Cum Works, apparently
>The original DS translation also has mistranslations and liberties taken with jokes added
I remember somebody tried to compare the original game's scripts, but disappeared after something like Week 1, I think?
most notably, the "stalker" nickname does not seem exist at all, it was localization wrestling with the "just drop the honorific ok?" part of Japanese (and apparently there's some lines where the localization is MORE formal/respectful)

Attached: 1445695675422.jpg (600x602, 31.96K)

>I assume you also have weaponized your autism to write ShoXNagi stuff. Unlimited Cum Works, apparently
Correct. I've written 732,621 words of TWEWY stuff in the past few months, not counting extensive author's notes. Also >not using the magic of the UG to generate unlimited cum
>OG translation
Also correct, the Stalker nickname was a complete fabrication for the OG. The OG also removed stuff including lore, such as taking out a reference to the Shinjuku SR, and added in jokes where none existed, such as the "Twinkle, twinkle" exchange between Beat and Kariya during W2, or substituting jokes that one cannot translate, such as Higashizawa's "Dilly-dally, shilly-shally". And yes, I don't think that the localization for the OG drastically changed Neku's personality or anything, but they did punch up his dialogue a little bit with adding new jokes, like the "zipper so zip it" line. People like the OG Sakuraba so much that I've seen complaints for NEO Neku acting too nice/not acting sarcastic enough. NEO Neku does act more "zen" than OG Neku in JP as well, but I wonder if the localization differences contribute to the EN fandom's bigger problem with it.
But people celebrate OG's localization while ragging on NEO's, which really boggles my mind, because people don't actually care about these games but use them for shitposting material.

I've got to head off to work, but I'll be keeping an eye on the proofreading. Please feel free to leave any comments here, the spreadsheet, or my email, and I'll gladly edit. Thank you all so much for everything.

>mfw there was a thread a few days ago where some guy was shitting himself over how the game was actually well translated and all the comparisons showing bad translations were out of context or some bullshit

>didn't even read the spreadsheet
The OP who retranslated the secret reports is also the guy who explained why those comparisons are garbage dude.

Not so much the TL works as I've yet to read tgrough them, but more unlimited coom works fics would be aces

The ShoNagi one was hot as fuk

shame we didn't get one of these for the pre neo days

Your autism is amazing
Your coloring is fucking amazing
And spaghetti, if you are reading this: Your art is fucking godly, I'll keep liking every single one of your posts till I die of sexual exhaustion
