I don't understans why the team behind GOW 2018 combat thought they had to cut basic and vital mechanics like jumping to "modernize" or make the combat more "realistic", if a mod would add a free jump or even juggling mechanic to this exact same core gameplay, including camera, the original vision wouldn't be lost in any way, and the combat would be 100% improved.

I actually find it extremely easy even on higher difficulties, you can basically parry everything with a very generous timeframe.
Air combat in previous GOWs were really cool, although not in the level of DMC or something like that, and i never say i don't enjoy 2018 at all, just think it could be much deeper if they didn't cut basic mechanics with a non sense excuse.

The combat in GoW was always shallow, but I'm both surprised and baffled at how they managed to make it even worse than before, in favor of some story about Kratos trying to be good father and raise his son to be better than him, with the entire emotional hook being about some woman we have never met, nor do we see in flashbacks like Kratos' original family, no to mention how Kratos' redemption happens off screen. I'm honestly confused how the fuck did this game get so much praise in the first place. Is adding a sad dad story all that's required these days for a game to get awards?
I really disagree. I used to love and be crazy good at the original trilogy, doing crazy combos instead of playing like a child, and i do think the ideas they had to revitalize a formula that was getting stale after six games, were really cool, i just don't think the execution is good, they dumbed it down a lot, when they could have the best of both wolrds.

I think it's obvious it was all for the sake of the cinematic nature of the game, which paid off for them in the end.
Combat is still passable though, the worst offender is the over the shoulder shit camera and the worst character progression systems of all time. I still don't understand how they thought the gearing and level system were ok. Probably the shittiest designed systems I've ever seen in a video game.

How it is linear? There is exploration, riddles, crafting, side quests. For hack n slash it's hardly linear. In GoW you just move in a straight line until the enemy arena is blocking you, you beat guys, the wall disappears and you repeat the same shit till the end of game.

To be honest I can describe every non linear game like this, even with open world like GTA, Elden Ring or BOTW. You have to be at least 15 to post here user.
Playing this now. Like every Sony game, the first 2-3 hours are just a needlessly slow tutorial before fucking off and letting you enjoy the game. I think the mini area puzzles looking for apples/runes/whatever are a waste of time, but the combat is pretty satisfying and the production work is amazing. I give it a strong 7.
