No, it's not. It's an important mechanic for survival games and rpgs. The reason everything else hamfists it into it is the same reason levelling has been hamfist into everything. Casuals want to play rpgs without playing rpgs.

The worst by far were QTE sequences, thank the lord it seems they actually died off.
Crafting is up there, but only because it was never implemented in an interesting or meaningful way, to my knowledge at least.
I believe that it has potential to be a cool mechanic.

No, the worst is fishing. Fortunately, it's contained enough in Squeenix games and other JRPGs.

dead space 2 literally opens with isaac assembling a plasma cutter out of a medical device, a flashlight, and some other bits and bobs, so it's very much in character at least

It's not important at all for rpgs.

RPG mechanics in non RPG games are cancer in general. Some manage to pull it off but mostly it's just a cheap way to imitate player growth by gimping the gameplay at the start of the game and allowing you to actually have fun once you leveled up more.

the actual reason is because those things allow the devs to stretch the game a lot more, and slowly reward you with things to make you think you're having progress, why make one treasure chest with a new weapon when you can split it in 5?
leveling up is the same shit, it rewards you for just playing the game, so you always feel like what you're doing is helping you, but in the majority of those games leveling does almost nothing, or they have a skill tree with skills that are barely noticeable (15% reload speed for 2 seconds after getting damage), they also add some important things that should be in the game in the first place, but bloat it with crap to make it seem bigger. reason for this is because it's hard to balance an actual rpg, but if the rpg part barely changes the game, you don't have to worry about balancing it, and you can benefit from the addicting aspect of it

Aside from survival games? Bound by Flame.
Crafting is easely ignored if you don't want to pay attention to it but you can use it very easely to customize your armour and create potions without going to the shop constantly.
The minor crafting aspects or Resident Evil game is also somewhat interesting. It's not overcomplicated and deepens the inventory management mechanic.

It's a really easy and lazy way to make gamers feel rewarded for doing menial tasks without actually giving them rewards. The player can spend dozens of hours hunting chests, doing side quests, fighting optional enemies, but in reality their only reward ended up being a decent weapon, and hundreds of excess bear skins.

The main thing that pisses me off is when the crafting requires ingredients that you can't obtain through natural side content gameplay. When you do all the sidequests but you still dont' have enough materials because you didn't think to hunt random fucking boars that spawn in the overworld, you have failed as a game designer.

dead space 3 was a fine sequel to dead space 2 and I'm tired of pretending it wasn't

Lolno. Progression is important in an RPG, crafting is not. The progression can come from leveling up and/or acquiring better loot.

I found crafting in Dead Space 3 pretty good, main problem was the balancing and universal ammo.
I like crafting equipment like weapons and armor, and I fucking HATE consumable crafting. IDGAF about potions and bow arrows and shit

Some survival games do it very well. Raft's progression, for example, starts you out with 4 squares of floor and a trash collecting hook made out of scrap. From there you'll start gathering materials manually, build a hammer to expand your raft, build tools to cook whatever meager food you can gather from barrels and purify the salt from water, and continue to expand your flimsy craft while trying to fend off the shark. After like just enough time to find this boring, you're going to start figuring out new recipes to make things easier and start crafting the all important anchor and land tools like an axe so you can explore islands, which inevitably leads you to expanding your raft enough to lay out your scanner and three antenna, and starting on the trail of the game's "campaign". After a few more hours you're likely going to have successfully armored the outside edge of your raft to fend of the shark and made collection nets so that you passively gather materials rather than having to manually gather everything. This is where the game really clicked for me, especially since this is also where you start being able to build more permanent upgrades to the raft like a reusable anchor, and since you're using up resources at a decent rate, you usually strike this nice balance of not fully running out of things but always needing a little bit more of this and that. I think the main reason this all works, possibly even better than Minecraft, is that your base, your raft, is always with you. You didn't build a sick skull fortress then abandon it because the surrounding area is effectively stripped of resources. There's a constant tangible benefit to improving the raft.

Crafting is only good when material acquisition is linear, the crafting doesn't require 10 items to make a shitty dagger and it can be used to break the game ala TES games.

Crafting only made sense in the early WoW days when you made things like arcanite reaper and engineering trinkets to break pvp matches, but now every game developer shoehorns crafting and its fluff, its unnecessary. I just played through Nioh 2 and Elden Ring and both games have crafting systems that are totally extraneous, its just a whole lot of extra button pushing

Depends on the game. But yeah, its usually out of place and shit. Like why the fuck did Dead space need crafting outside of appealing to normal fags? Like I couldn't be assed to collect 5000 parts and put them together, let me just play the fucking game.

Same goes for skill branch trees too. I would really rather not have to unlock a bunch of useless skills that should have either been there right away, or don't do much to change the game at all outside of damage numbers.

Dead space is a horror action game. Crafting weapons is not needed when scarcity is supposed to be a core element of the game. You survive with the limited tools provided, you don't build the giga necro-slayer 3000.
