FF7 was hard carried by nostalgia and 2000's edgelords who had just gotten into anime like eva. Getting to play it again in hd with the nostalgia goggles off made people realize it really wasn't as good as they remembered, as is the case with most older games featured in "best game ever" lists. At this point most people only care about whether Aerith gets to live or not, after that's done with nobody will give a single fuck.
