>ray tracing is a gimmi

I'm beginning to believe bros

Its visual flare at the cost of performance that upscales like shit. Trade half your fucking gpu cycles for some goddamn self shadowing? Nah.
Call me when it doesn't make devs lazier or their jobs easier. Fuck devs.
errs
They have RT for the first Quake now, too. Good shit.
I'd want to believe too if I shelled out a fuckload of money for nothing LOL!
Holy shit when will these retards learn that simply slapping modern graphical improvements onto retro looking games will always look like shit because of how it clashes with the original simplistic art style. It just makes everything look so fucking cheap.
>slapping modern graphical improvements onto retro looking games will always look like shit
picunrel
>it just makes everything look so cheap
that's just your projecting, retarded opinion, contrarianfag
no his pic looks like shit because it just looks like cardboard figures propped up
I'll pronounce over rsytracing when a game is made around it instead of slap it over the previous tech.
>some retard thinks this looks better
?????????????
>*ruins the original style and atmosphere*
heh, nothing personnel kid
No, it really fucking looks like absolute dogshit. I don't understand why mouth breathing retards lap that 2.5 octo path unity looking shit up. It looks like HIRE THIS MAN particles up the ass amateur garbage. You want to see that shit done right, look at the PS1 breath of fire games.
The word is "consistency"
I believe in ray tracing's potential, but it's rarely enough of an improvement to justify the GPU cost. 4k, however, is a fucking scam. So much time, effort, worry and more wasted on something that a miniscule amount of PC players even bother to use.
Yes goyim, there was no way to do lighting in games before our savior Nvidia charged 2000$ per ray tracing GPU!
UH oh, it looks like you cant hit 60fps with your 2k GPU, better buy the newest one! Only 3000$ this time!
Current implementations of ray tracing are only partial, and tend to be hybridized, games that do full ray tracing generally have low detail assets and still rely heavily on denoising.
Anyone who says that Ray tracing sucks is a huge faggot, it's an outright superior system for rendering that can be used to passively create a lot of detail we spend a lot of time faking, but it's also very expensive and even next next gen RTX GPUs will feel insufficient, modern games won't take full advantage of ray tracing for more than a decade.
ray tracing is not a meme, it's just to performance draining currently, but don't expect retards with 10 year old GPUs who think it's a trick to make their already irrelevant junk cards obsolete to understand that.
If you use any emulator or source port to play doom, you're already ruining the "original style and atmosphere", retard.
Cope and sneed, meme tracing cultist
This looks like shit
u mad?
I mean there really isn't, sans static baked on lighting. Realistic lighting requires simulating lighting like it's a particle.
This looks like absolute shit. like that awful redrawn Pinky Demon that's floating around
>gaytracing and virtual gayality have been out for 16 years
>ummm it kind of works in Doom maybe??
It's over...
Raytracing is literally the best way to simulate light.
It's not a gimmick, it's just expensive.
Reminder that nearly all major games this decade will be made with PS5/Xbox in mind, platforms that have absolutely dogshit ray tracing performance. Ray tracing during this console cycle will be an expensive add-on at best, nothing essential or necessary to the visual make-up of a game. Games like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition (built with ray tracing in mind, doesn't work without ray tracing) will be extremely rare
what's the difference between ray tracing and the UE5 lighting technology that looks so neat in the matrix demo? coz maybe we could just put all retro games in ue5 and make them look like that
Absolute retard.
The difference between a technology existing and being able to run it in real time on a commercial grade hardware are two completely different things.
That's ugly.
Looks awful with ray tracing. Not visually, but artistically. Splashing ray tracing on old games is a gimmick. It ruins its original aesthetics, it destroys a lot of ambience and atmosphere expertly crafted and thought up by the devs.
This next gen updates to old games are cringy as afk junior
>half the framerate
>looks worse
wow, RTX is amazing
as someone who owns two 3080s, I never ever turn on raytracing in any game, it's a worthless gimmick
I bet you said the same thing about shaders back in 2000 and then again about dynamic shadows and then again about tessellation, all of which are now absolutely standard and you will complain about a game not having them.
Ray tracing as a technology is not a gimmick but every implementation so far except metro exodus is a gimmick. The doom ray tracing mod annihilates the atmosphere of the game.
>cars are a worthless gimmick, I'll just stick to my horse
Ray tracing is good, important for graphical fidelity.
It just pointless and a gimmick when applied to old games cause it completely destroys the original art style.
wow that 2080 people bought in 2018 sure was worth it now
i don't see how it destroys the artstyle. textures are still the same. i like it
It's actually worth more now than when they bought it.
illumination is fucked, ambience is fucked.
the old version had every thing hand crafted. Lightning, or simulation of it, was baked, everything was carefully created.
Ray tracing is an automatization. There isn't care about how it is applied. It just automatically adds lightning with zero care about atmosphere or artstyle.
Yes, but running doom on a fax machine or a gameboy is just as bad, so how is this any different?
Doom has been a meme and a way to demonstrate your technical programming skills for decades now, because the source code is available.
Ck
You have to compare it to a game with literally no fucking shadows for it to seem impressive
>Anyone who says that Ray tracing sucks is a huge faggot
Ray tracing sucks. People will never use it as a full rendering solution to "make things look better", because drawing polygons looks better and is cheaper for a given level of performance, which is exactly what matter for games. The idea that "well, akhsually, in the theoretical limit, if you could cast a billion rays that would approximate the ideal light bouncing that..." blah blah nobody cares because it just doesn't look better and requires MORE fake shit like AI de-noising to not just look like complete ass. I like what UE5 is doing as that seems to be actually clever, but the idea that you can and should just shove commercial offline rendering techniques into games is a scam.
>dude, this smartphone thing is a total scam, nobody will every want to use a fucking screen to type. People need physical keyboards that take up half of the phone's screen to use it properly.
not the guy you're replying to, but touchscreens are pretty garbage
Get a phone that isn't 10 years old
>People will never use it as a full rendering solution to "make things look better"
are you willing to back your words up and say that if major development has fully switched by january 1st 2040 you'll kill yourself?
Yea normalfags are retarded, that's not new
posted from my iphone
>just 18 more years, trust the plan
>acting like game development hasn't gone through massive changes in the last 18 years
Well, I guess it's not fair to ask you to remember a time when you haven't even been born yet.
shaders and dynamic shadows made a big difference, tessellation not so much
gayming is stagnating kid
in 1993 you were playing on snes, in 2007 you were playing fucking crysis. in 2021 you were playing... far cry 6?
Nah they were a meme that halved my framerate and killed the SOUL of my games.
I needed to go and my some new Nvidia card to even run it. what a fucking scam.
My Voodoo3 was supposed to last for 50 years if it wasn't for jewvidiya.
holy fuck the raytracing doom looks awful
it destroys the lighting
real time lighting was a mistake and im sick of pretending otherwise
even in new games it's pointless, it barely looks any different and halves your framerate
Just because you're fat and ugly irl and destroy every single human standard for beauty, doesn't mean every single human in existence is ugly.
this is projection and i think you need to see your psychiatrist again
looks like i was spot on lmao
dudes what if we started calling it
GAY tracing lol
>that's just your projecting, retarded opinion, contrarianfag
It literally looks like one of those shitty cash-grab games that use default unity assets and shit.
There's a difference between seeing the potential of a technology but realizing it's not ready yet, and seething about it uncontrollably calling it a meme because your sheep consumer brain is forcing you to buy into a new technology right now.
These threads seem to be made strictly by the latter.
ray tracing will stop being a meme next decade maby
>just 18 more years
People have been trying to seriously implement raytracing in games for at least that many years already. Even with dedicated hardware, it's obvious that it's just not worth the cost to do ray tracing as the primary lighting method, and nobody has demonstrated anything showing otherwise. It's *always* "Look at these shiny mirrors and balls reflecting off eacg other in a way you'd never cares about in an actual game"! Using it as a tool to make slightly better approximations of GI might be useful if done intelligently, but everyone tries to make it a dumb, costly showoff gimmick.
Plenty of stuff has actually been demonstrated, but you just keep ignoring it. Look up every single GPU benchmarking program ever.
Consoles holding everything back, as usual, so you're not going to see anything close to that in actual gaming for at least another generation.
