Did alien isolation kill the then-popular hide and seek horror genre by showing players who boring it is for extended...
Alien: Isolation doesn't want you to hide in lockers, but most people that play it are retarded
Who boring??
It killed it by giving the alien too good AI for a first outing, even if it is the Alien. It shattered the illusion of what these hide and seeks can be when you can see the AI scripting trigger in real time. AI is a tricky thing, clever AI you will be against for long durations is even trickier.
No, it's peaked around 1st amnesia and has been milked to death by the end of 2014 with steam being absolutely plastered with hide in the corner vidya. Isolation was at least 2 years late to the party
This.
The game was absolute kino, but broke the mold of the faggots who either played it like Cowadoody, or those hiding in places for minutes.
No other game managed to get the feeling of being hunted right as this one.
OP already exposed himself by calling it hide and seek.
I didn't like this game, j feel like it got boring pretty quick. Never felt like the Alien was that smart either, felt like any other hide and seek enemy, also by mid game you could pretty much always make the alien run away.
The sheer number of lockers available in almost every room you go to jumped out at me right away as being odd. Why would hiding spots be so prevalent everywhere, unless they were designed to be traps?
joel
You're only need to sneak past the alien (or aliens) maybe 3 times the entire game. You shouldn't hide. You need to keep moving. Thats the trick of this game.
It was just too long
One of the greatest SP of all time.
They were handy as hide holes as the ayy walked past if you had your pants down and couldn't crouchwalk away in time.
Given the choice, a desk or bed would be better
How you people still manage to dick suck this game so hard is beyond me. The ai for the alien is good but everything else like the shitty repetitive level design, low enemy variety, lack of interesting puzzles that aren't the same four shitty hacking minigames and needlessly stretched runtime make it an absolute chore to play through.
Way too long
>low enemy variety
Really?
It's a space station, not an ecosystem with wild life and various aliens.
>the shitty repetitive level design
Lol what?
>low enemy variety
Lol what?
>lack of interesting puzzles
Lol what?
This might be the only time I've actually seen a game flying over somebody's head.
Fuck off. Xeno wasn't wasn't the best part imo, interactions between the androids and humans was kino. Crafting shit, hatching little plans to play different parties against each other and get the fuck out while they all die, nothing else compares.
Just stop playing when you get bored then. Problem solved.
>alien shows up
>hide in a locker
>waits untill he go into the vents
>move up and find a new locker
This is how you beat this game.
>Alien: Isolation doesn't want you to hide in lockers, but most people that play it are retarded
>The game literally forces you to hide at times because there's no other option as the levels are so linear the Alien can and will appear anywhere
>NOOO YOU'RE DOING IT WROOONG
This is all true, also by the mid-point (or whenever it is you get the flamethrower) the alien just becomes an annoying nuisance. The game stops being "scary" until nearer the end when you're facing off against multiple Xenos, and even then you still have your flamethrower
Going into a locker changes the alien's behavior, in effect, shortening the leash that everyone complains the Xeno has tied to you. It senses that you've gone to ground and will only go to the vent for a second and then drop right down again, and will actively patrol more in the area around you. Staying out of anything you have to open a door to hide in keeps it in its standard hunting mode of just randomly dropping down somewhere and wandering off.
Who else here used the flamethrower as a torch?
I'm pretty sure the enemies can't even detect the light that comes out of it.
beats following the alien around and praying that he doesn't randomly turns on his tracks like a fucking buffoon that lost his car keys
I played on easy mode: the post
This is my favorite horror game, i barely played of the amnesia clones but when this game was talked up i gave it a go and absolutely loved it.
It's the first game in a long time to actually make me feel tense, endless horror movies have really ruined me.
Xeno captains sometimes turn to see if anyone's behind them. We call it 'Crazy Ayyy-van'.
The AI is shit though, it will follow you everywhere for no reason because it's on a leash. It's like having a dog run around you non stop except it's supposed to be scary for some reason.
Once you know you're playing against a dog you can just throw him a bone and skip everything
But they stop chasing sound makers if you throw them over and over again.
They're on a leash anyway, throwing a sound marker to go forward will make you tug on the leash like a madman and bring the alien on you instantly.
You just need to make some noise, wait for the pup to come see the noise, move to the maximum the leash will let you, make some noise again and repeat.
I'm gonna be real honest.
The Alien AI is nowhere as good as people want to believe it is. In a lot of instances it was clear as day the game simply told the AI exactly where you were, even if it doesn't make sense for the Alien to know.
How do people still think it's just the one alien running around magically appearing everywhere you are even after the game shows you there's dozens all over the station? There was just an alien or two in every area that begins tracking you as you arrive.
I'm not talking about when the Alien appears in whatever area you're in. That's just scripted.
I'm talking about instances when the Alien is already patrolling the area you're in, and ocasionally just making a perfect beeline straight to wherever you are, even if you made no sound and the Alien didn't see you
There's only the one Xeno until you blow it into the gas giant, the characters only ever mention a single Xeno that's on the station, characters like Axel, saying how there's "a monster on board", it's only when you destroy the hive that you unleash the other Xenos into the station.
You're always making noise. You shoes constantly squeak on the floor, you can kick stray cans, bump office chairs, etc. Little things that may not be enough to directly reveal yourself to it, but enough that it can probably get a general idea of something moving about in the area.
All the Xenos look exactly the same. It's a huge station. For all anyone knows, it was the same one, but it was actually multiple drones. They didn't have any way of knowing that though, since no one knew there was a hive on the station.
I always assumed there were a few running around but it's always the same one following you based off how it reacts to the flamethrower, I wonder if when you get out of the nest if the new aliens reset their reaction or if they just carry over the AI
You're giving the AI too much credit, it doesn't take into account any of that stuff, there are times where it either magically knows where you are or for some reason it doesn't fuck off like in the medical bay
True that, I never considered that, I just thought it would be odd for Xenos to be working separately alone instead of together like they do near the end
You're right, it was all artificial fun. None of us actually enjoyed it because the AI isn't real.
Alien Isolation was a really good concept that was executed well, I can't fault it for what they wanted to make
the only issue is that the game drags on
and on
and on
yeah, it would be so much better if you could go though a bunch of the game without seeing the alien at all because the leash is unrealistic
fuck proper pacing
Presumably there was an unseen Queen somewhere on the station, which would amplify the hive mind connections between all the Xenos. Once one or two got blasted with the flamer, the rest would then know to be more cautious of it.
True, the game cock teases you with an ending like 3 times
There're not the fucking borg lmao
>themusic picking up when waiting for the transit car after Axel's death and realizing the Alien can kill you right there if you make too much noise
>the game telling you something is wrong with reactor maintenance then finding the Nest when you go there, with the motion tracker now freaking out
>the dark, smoky corridor without hiding place you have to go through in the Solomon Tower after the short circuit and with the xenomoprh on the prowl
The game kinda dragged out at the end but it was still very enjoyeable.
Game is alright, but I've never been a fan of the type of horror games that expect you to spend a significant portion of the experience crouch walking.
No, but later movies and media have shown that there are ways a Queen can communicate and coordinate the actions of the hive over great distances. A drone that screams in pain from being flamed would send a feeling of distress out that could be picked up, analyzed, and then acted upon accordingly by the rest.
that's the point
everything you've done to survive or beat the aliens has failed
you're supposed to feel frustrated and drained because that's what you would feel if you were there
it's called immersion
like the first few hours of it
then it get real repetitive
the dumb robot filter section doesnt help either
the worst part is that it spawn a hide and seek horror sub genres that flood the market
This design has to die. Crouching should reduce your visible frame not make less noise. Also you should be able to maintain the same walking speed no matter if you crouching or standing.
you're becoming hysterical.
I got filtered because they don't advertise as PURELY stealth enough.
Most new players like me probably tried to kill a single Android with a shotgun and immediately were pissed because the game only rewards hiding and running.
Most players want to actively influence the environment and not be passive "bitches" that run away
Pretty sure the alien doesn't actually react to you walking, he only gives a shit when you sprint, which makes sprinting completely useless except for the chapters when he's not around because he'll home in on you instantly even if he wasn't in the area
You don't get the shotgun until the android only section so I don't see what the problem would be, you can get away with shooting them while the alien is around anyways so long as you're quick enough
only thing I don't like is how you can't use the xenos to fuck up androids like you can use them both to fuck up humans
I ger why the androids don't attack the xeno on sight, but the movies clearly show xenos don't make a distinction
yea but in the end its useless. You gain nothing from standing your ground. You can only lose.
The best option is to run away
>*alien screams in pain*
>translation: "hey guy this bitch has a flametrower, watch out"
it's survival horror user
a huge part of the game is managing resources
you can use the resources to kill androids, hell some set pieces require it
the game eventually gives you a rail gun to one shot androids anyway
>boring
i loved it. I only ever had to hide for mere moments because I didn't run around like a retard and draw the alien's attention constantly.
Yeah I guess in the films they stand their ground and everything works out fine so I can see why going into the game you might think that
Git gud. You can finish it in less than 10 hours and even 6 if you speedrun it
Yea it would be scary if you didn't know when the alien would pop out. You always know that the alien will pop up around you non stop until that end of the game, it's not scary, it's tedious.
I think there was an excess of games that went for this Amnesia TDD niche that is the mix of stealth/horror, Outlast and other games that caused a bit of a burn out
