Gameplaywise CT fairs a bit better since FF7 is so ridiculously easy you can get by on just attacking and healing for 90% of the game. FF7's story and characters are better written and more in depth though, CT is cute and charming but that's pretty much all it has to offer.

Chrono Trigger beats FFVII in almost every regard. It's still one of the best JRPGs ever made.
