DOA6 has two major problems. The next game needs to fix those to sell well again.

1st: DOA6 does not offer anything substantial that you can't get from DOA5LR.
Fighting games want to do sequels, but they also want to keep all the old characters. The problem is that if they keep all the old characters every time while creating a new game from scratch, they run into a budget issue. The games would cost more and more to develop, as each sequel has more characters to recreate (on top of adding new ones). Because of this, fighting games have followed two development paths:
1. Make a sequel reusing assets from the previous game. This lets you keep all the old characters so the budget can be focused on adding new characters and balancing the game. Of course, this also means the game doesn't really feel new and some people feel ripped off. This model is slowly dying out as developers are now using DLC to add characters instead.
2. Make a sequel from scratch. This means you'll have to remove characters to not blow your budget, but you can make the game feel fresh with updated graphics and making big changes to the gameplay. Typically, this will also sell better if it has been a long time since the last release, as people feel more eager for a new game. In other words, the freshness of the game, and the wait time since the last game, makes people "forgive" the removed characters.

DOA6 has the disadvantages of both paths and none of the advantage. The game looks and plays similar to DOA5LR, yet has way less content. DOA5LR (and DOA5U before it) looked and played similar to DOA5, but they didn't remove any content, only added. DOA5 did remove content compared to DOA4, but it justified its existence by big gameplay change and a massive graphical overhaul. There was also a lot of time between DOA5 and DOA4, but it hasn't really been long between DOA6 and DOA5LR. DOA6 has no reason to exist.

The devs simultaneously want the game to be:
1. A cool fighting games that focuses on being cool and sexy

All games made back when Itagaki was in charge followed a very clear vision:
A cool fighting game that focuses on being cool and sexy.

None of the new girls since DOA5 manages to mix both. They all focus on "sexy" (to a specific audience anyway) and have nothing cool to them, except Mila who has the opposite problem (Not sexy enough). And Rig was cool, but nobody gives a shit about Diego. DOA6 launched with more female characters than male ones, which is unusual for the series, yet keep adding female characters. And Mai and Kula certainly don't have the "cool" factor. So the balance is all out of whack, the game focuses too much on having sexy characters... but then it doesn't even succeed at that because they also want to be taken as a serious fighter and remove fan service. Look, if you want to fill the game with sexy girls, at least have better fan service costumes. Now the game is both less cool AND less sexy than previous games. And no, Sony censorship policies are not a good excuse. We can see what they still allow in DOAX Scarlet and that game is still plenty sexy. It's a vision problem.

Go back to the original spirit of DOA: A cool fighting games that focuses on being cool and sexy. Right now, DOA is trying to be too sexy yet fails at being sexy, and isn't as cool as before.

And forget about "esport" shit. Esport doesn't improve sales. Anime games get 25% as much entrants as popular fighting games yet still only get 5% of their sales. I'm pretty sure the only reason they're focusing on esport is because some guys at KT like fighting game tournaments. Well too bad, your fighting game isn't popular with tournament players. Who cares as long as it still sells well? Leave your ego at the door.

Why not? They could even keep all the silly party games and the volleyball game in the original Xtreme line up, but also have Zack build a bunch of resorts for different types of alternative sports. Snowboarding, ping pong, golfing, all the while expanding on the management sim aspect as well.

Japanese studios might make insanely dumb choices at times but there's no chance they looked at dota and thought "we'll do that too". SFV is lightyears behind Dota in terms of its esport scene so DOA stands absolutely no chance. The reality of esports support is that it's a cheaper form of advertising, it's literally as simple as that. All major publishers put their esports investment down as advertising in their quarterly reports.

The shitty marketing didn't help either, even if the core gameplay was improved.

I don't think they can go much further in the graphics department until next gen. 6's framerate drops hards for a sec on my ps4 every time it loads a fighter in Survival. Ah, I play on PC so I had no idea it had those problems. Just further shows that they needed to wait longer before making 6. When they announced they were no longer working on 5, I figured they were taking a break until the next gen came out. At least, it should've been more than a few months after that announcement before they started working on 6.

the series needs a better (art) director. The characters and stages introduced after Itagaki's exit are way worse than the ones from doa 1-4. The times were fighting games set the standard for graphic performance on consoles is over anyway, but at least it should continue have a good art direction. The stages in doa6 especially are a god damn mess.

A lot of good points, but the issue of is how to actually fix things and make the series a success again. I think a big problem really is that DoA doesn't have any cool gimmick anymore, everyone and their mum does stage interactions, everyone has some lewd costumes, and only MK has good graphics now. They probably don't have the money to make DoA one of the best looking games you'll play that year. Then they traded in cool for silly around DoA4 and 5. Focusing on fanservice seems like a stupid idea when you could just not then still include a bunch a la Soul Calibur or hell even SFV or T7. Focusing on esports helps to keep your long term vets buying and playing, but shouldn't really be a development priority imo, that's more on the community.
I say fuse Xtreme with the main games so we just have a fuck ton of modes, turn it into almost a Smash affair. A couple of minigame modes to unlock outfits, an actual GOOD story mode, and good online system would help a lot. Put the homie from Nioh in the game. And just embrace some of the insanity, Yakuza is a success cause it just embraces it's own craziness.

Most of the girls have had their strengths laid out in the classic Xtreme games. Kokoro for example was a POWer character, but was one of the more moderate ones. Her strength was defense, she probably had the best ground range of any girl, able to reach and control spikes from far away, though she was a poor blocker due to having a longer wind up to jump and being short. Very hard to knock down too. TN has never really put any great details down on their skills where you can find them. It's just trial and error to see what works best, starting with what little info we're given.

A good story can also be silly and fun. It doesn't have to take itself seriously. Cause right now their stories are full of the stupid shit like you said but they just don't present it in a fun way so it's just stupid.
