Final Fantasy Thread

Never played a FF game before and the amount of games in the series is pretty intimating.

6 or 7 are both good. Haven't played any others

Play:
>The PSP versions of 1/2 if you can
>V
>VI
>VII
>IX

Play if you feel the game really appeals to you:
>X
>VIII
>XV
>The MMOs

Skip all the others

IV, VII

Play the PSP anniversary edition of Final Fantasy 1.

wtf is that box art?
FF1 is the best though, start with that. A world of adventure and soul.

Play all the numbed mainline ones, starting with the first. You can skip the sequels to mainline ones since those were pretty much cash grabs. You can skip XI and XIV since those are MMOs and require a lot longer time investment than the rest which are single player.

Play 9 first
Skip 2, 6, 8, 12 and 13

Start with 7. Not because it's the best, but because it's a good benchmark for if you'll like the series - The stories aren't interconnected, but the weirdness of the stories is a mainstay.

After that, do 1 & 2's PSP versions. Follow that up with 4 & 6. 3 and 5 are interesting, but kind of eh story-wise. Following that, do 8 & 9. 9 is weirdly classic, but in a good way. 10 is good, 12 is great if you abuse gambits and just enjoy the story, 13 and 15 are pretty serviceable. 13 has an okay story with very linear gameplay - But that's all the games, honestly. 15 has a good story, but very repetitive and easy gameplay.

The only games that matter are FFIV to FFIX
VIII is optional but has a pain in the ass system
X is optional but it has a much easier system to work with
XI and XIV are MMOs
XIII and XV are shit
Also take a look at the DS remakes of I-III or any PSP versions

This

It really isn't that bad

only worthwhile games from the series are 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9.

3 is the only worthwhile one

>After that, do 1 & 2's PSP versions
Do the NES version of FF1 and use "Final Fantasy Randomizer" with all the randomization options disabled to patch the rom to remove all the bugs and logic errors from it (enemies cast spells properly; restances/morale/running work right) while maintaining the aesthetic feel of an NES game

Don't be a pussy, play the original versions of the games in order.

This user is 100% correct though I personally think the GBA ports of 1/2 are just as good but go with PSP if you can. I will disagree that IV needs to be skipped, it's perfectly fine as long as you play the SNES or GBA ports.

How do I get that UI? Looks pretty good

They suck, play Dragon QuesT instead

VI and IX are the best ones. V and X are incredibly good. XII might be a hit or miss. Avoid XV and II.

What kind of game do you want user, there's a lot of variables in the series with all the games and spin offs

Make sure you're using Retroarch and change your menu driver to "ozone"

Nice. Thanks, man.

Best FF

Yes it is.

Nah, PS1 versions of 1 and 2
1 is best with the magic charge system instead of MP system, and the PS1 is the best looking version that also has the original difficulty

>What should I play first
General entry points are the first one (PSP version of course), the third one (DS or PSP), the fourth one (DS or PSP), VI (GBA w/fixed music) or VII (any version really)
>What should I skip
2 and everything after IX. Fill that hole in your heart with Dragon Quest once you hit the end.

Ohhh man. This is a huge question. First it's worth noting that each entry has multiple versions updates and remakes so it's about choosing which game plus which version.

1 - the simplest and much like Dragon Quest 1 is useful if you want to see how things started but not required. Not sure which version is best but there are some enhanced ones vs original famicom
2 - similar to 1 with a bit more story etc. Not essential but if you're interested. Also not sure which one.
3 - the first one with the true final fantasy traditional job system - late to be released outside Japan. Play the PC version which is a vastly updated 3D remake and worthy.
4 - This is one of my favorites and I consider it a must play of the old school. The first to have really fantastic story elements. Play the PC version ( based upon a NDS era remake ) with mods - specifically Japanese audio mod. There is also a direct sequel called The After Years with it's remake also on PC. Definitely a great story based classic final fantasy experience.
5 - Worthy and adds the job system to to some of the story stuff of 4. This one didn't get a 3d remake like the previous 2 so I'm not sure of the best version. The presence of Gilgamesh as a character is great!
6 - absolutely must play as the last and best of the old school. Many consider FFVI one of the best JRPGs of all time. Not sure what version is best.

Running out of room so I'll do the others in another post

>Hey SE can we have another ff tactic
>sure here is a new tactic for the psp
>okay but can we have more
>okay here is ff13
>thats not tactic
>okay fine here is ff13-2
>wtf why are you making another one
>sorry here is ff13-2
>why stop
>okay here is ff 15...in 10 years
>fuck you
>here have a remake of ff7
>I DONT WANT THAT, I WANT TACTIC!!!

Marketing says turn-based games are super niche now. Please understand.

This but skip 2. Play 1 and 3 on the Nes. 4, 5, 6 on the SNES and the rest on their respective first version

There are some good indie ones on PC actually. One I can't remember by name at the moment is really like a FFTactics or TacticsOgre

This lacks info and often times (especially English release ) the first release version isn't the best. For instance FFIV us release called FF2 on SNES lacks both content and script as it was cut down for US release. FFIII on famicom requires a fan translation , but it's not as good as the remake in mechanics etc.

famicom FFIII is better than the DS remake.

Whatever you play, just be sure it's an original version and not a remake. Real men don't play remakes.

FF is storyheavy shit that can be safely ignored. You want a real RPG, play something like Eye of the Beholder.

No it's not. It doesn't even have the same story elements or depth.

play 5, 6, 7, xv, tactics

skip everything else

Play 7 and 9 first so you can take part in the constant arguments here over which one is best.

Play 1, 2 and 3 first, they're the best.

Psp version is far and away the best looking version

I recommend the psp version of III as well for the biggest world and best dungeons

Attached: hqdefault (1).jpg (480x360, 22K)

are 3 and 4 really that shit or just don't add anything new?

FFI - Wonderswan/PlayStation
FFII - Wonderswan/PlayStation
FFIII - Famicom with Chaos Rush translation patch
FFIV - PSP if you want a bundled sequel, Super Famicom (with Spooniest's "J2Evisceration" translation patch) if you don't care
FFV - SFC with Spooniest's "Legend of the Crystals" translation patch
FFVI - SNES with hairy_hen's "Retranslated" patch
FFVII - PlayStation

Any of the SNES games are good starting points.

Start with the first and work your way through in release order. Play the older titles with original hardware on a crt display if possible.
1, 4 and 7 are my favorites

>Story elements
All they did was attempt to give each party member a samll intro story and failed miserably, the overall plot is identical. The original played like a blobber in a way where all 4 boys were essentially a single character. It's up to you what you prefer but I don't think anyone cares about the story in this game, it's about the mechanics, combat, and setpieces.

>Depth
What, the remake didn't change that much. Enemy count was reduced to 3 due to DS limitations, removed the ability to target enemy types with spells, classes/spells/enemies are rebalanced, and worst of all they added an adjustemet time when swapping classes. The adjustement time is awful and no one defends it, they should have kept the currency the NES version uses or let you swap whenever you wanted. The NES version feels very "modern" for a NES jrpg and even beats some SNES jrpgs in that sense.

Not related but don't play the SNES version of FFIV, it sucks. Play the DS version or a fan translation fo the SFC version.

3 is an objectively inferior 5 in terms of job mechanics and story (even the remake's), and this is coming from someone who beat and likes 3.
If you like FF's job systems then give it a shot by all means, FF1 too if you REALLY like them.
4 uses the predetermined class system with a bunch of different part members, but the story is pretty poorly written overall.
It has memorable moments, but everything inbetween is full of poorly translated dialogue and lots of blunt announcements that can really take you out of the game because of how robotic exchanges can sound.
The breakneck pace at which you can burn through events and how often the game shuffles people in and out of your party can turn some people off too.

You don't need to play the really old one, star with 5 and go up from there. I did not played 13, but I guess you can skip this one, because it is very controversial.

There's only one you really need to play at this point. Skip 7R, skip XIV.

First 3 are the best, after that they turn into soap operas

Attached: ff3_gameplay.png (256x224, 3K)

Only play the ones before 5 if you really like school jrpgs or want to know the story of the franchise. They can be fun, but are dated and have a very shallow story.

romhacking.net/hacks/1631/

Patch the NES version of 1 and play it. Don't bitch out with the PSP/PSX versions

This user has a good opinion. If you like strategy-type games try Tactics. I really enjoy (most of) the final fantasy mainline games but Tactics holds a special place in my heart. It is considered by some to be a hidden gem in the series.

>>What should I play first
4, 5, 6, 7

>>What should I skip
2, the 13 trilogy, the MMOs (11&14), and 15
