Well for developers who have a game to sell it is, because they now have a bargaining chip to wrestle Steam down from their 30% cut, which means they can potentially take home a larger share of their game's revenue, but not the consumer who want to buy that game because if the game isn't on your platform you can't lower your price to fuck over the other guy which helps the consumer.

If every game was available on gog, that would be all I use. I liked it when all I had to do was select the shortcut and the game would start. No fucking login. Steam spoiled the shit out of people. They had almost everything and you only needed to login once and everything was there, if you had your info saved and steam started at launch then it was just a thoughtless process.
Now the publishers have all gotten wise and started their own launchers and some are making it exclusive to their own launcher. Some are waiting to release on steam after the revenue stream slows down.
Looking back on it, I remember now how much I hated the idea of steam. I hated that I would need to be online to log into my account to access my games. I hated that I would no longer be able to own a disk, install a game, and just play it without having to be online. Something changed with the always on, high speed connection. Slowly, I just accepted the new era.

Buying games from GoG in terms of convinience is pretty much the same as from any other store unless you immideatly download installers and put them on spare HDD and store it somewhere. Arguably Steam is because one of the things it does as part of the installation process is install a service that has no purpose other than granting itself system level access to your computer and preventing windows from alerting you when it decides to start doing shit it would never be allowed to at user level. Basically, they installed themselves a backdoor into your system with full privileges. There was a minor scandal recently when a researcher discovered that even if you trust Valve there's all kinds of holes in the service rendering it open to abuse by third parties.
