Making a party isn't hard. Just cover different bases with each member and you'l be fine.
Tank, healer, phys damage, status effects and mage will get you through any of the games. From that point on it's just a matter of getting gud
How do you use a Harbinger in Nexus? I never used them in 5 and am considering changing my party around to include one with my Nightseeker and Sovereign.

I have mixed feelings about this one. At least the next patch will cut down some of the insane grind you have to do.
I mean I personally like the game, but I would still call it bad. Although other than getting a decent weapon being rng just playing every mission once isn't that bad, it's when you get to all of the late game farming it really goes to shit.

Except for Untold, god what a nightmare Azure Rainforest was in that one. I'm not sure how you're even supposed to make a 'strong' party in that game given that the good old Landy/Prot/Surv | Medic/Alch formation wasn't really cutting it.
3 (respec party to max accuracy but can't hit the whale anyway), 4 (got burned out in the ice caves and I have no idea what I am doing anymore), 5 (Hippogryph oneshots 3/5 of party when he does the swoop move), Untold (Life got in the way, haven't got back to it).
Every time I start a new game I see some tip on how to build the part (attack is the best defence, make sure to have a plan etc) but they always
fail anyway (4 party not doing enough damage, 5 party being a glass cannon)
I keep getting back anyway because those first hours are like ASMR in game form.
I tried that at first but I got a suboptimal party that wasn't really good at anything. Later games I have tried to create setups for big damage but it either isn't as effective as I would hope (can they please just tell me what the moves actually do instead of vague shit like "does heavy damage to one foe"?) or the single base that I didn't cover effectively is fatal.
I wish the entire game wasn't a boring roguelike

If you hit a wall, do some theorycrafting. The whale is a bitch and a half if I remember right, but EO3 can be broken extremely easy if you push just a little further.

there's skill sims for that that tell you exactly what each skill does.
As for party suggestions I always like ailment/bind focused teams with a buffer/debuffer and either a healer or a tank, not both. This usually works pretty well until the post game super boss who always out damages my ability to heal. FUCK the abyssal princess

that's almost the same team I had, just with an herbalist instead of a second necro. Also I was on the spec without petrify, but I honestly forget what that necro did. Zombie dance/guard I think? I also know I didn't use zombie powder at all.
Hippogryph was actually the hardest boss for me death count wise, which was still only 2 or 3. In case you don't know you can break his guard by doing 500 damage in one turn, or bind his head to stop him from healing. I do remember running out of tp at the end of the fight and having to auto attack for the last couple of turns too.
this is also the only game that I actually beat the super boss in (although I did have to rest half my party to do so), so this party should be good enough
He does it when he drops below 75%, 50%, and 25% of his health. Then he stops attacking for several turns so you have time to heal up from it while he heals up a little himself(if he goes back above one of his thresholds, he doens't get an extra use of Swoop, so dont worry about that.

Hippogryph can be rough because he does a lot of damage, and comes RIGHT before you unlock advanced class options, so your options are still pretty restricted when it comes to dealing with him.
Great, the tutorials alone will rape you. It really makes sure you get the basics or else you'll be shredded into pieces, and one enemy is enough to do that. Well, thats one reason its an underrated game.
I suggest you read about the card and smith quest guides at least. It will make your life easier if you know how helpful the effects on each character.

I either didn't know or forgot about the guard break thing, but binding the head and using the time to set up again was something I did.
So what I should to is bind+poison, estimate when the the bind runs out at the 75%, 50% and 25% mark, defend until he does the swoop, and then go back to business as usual?

It's called paying attention. Etrian bosses always have phase transitions at HP thresholds. They also tend to have patterns.
Hippogryph just uses Sky Dive when it transitions into the next phase. That's all. It's not arcane or obscure.
as long as you're aware of the concept "enemies might do actions at specific health thresholds" it's simple pattern recognition. it should only take a couple fights to notice.
Also I found my notes from my playthrough, it looks like it took me 25 turns to kill him and he used sky dive on turns 5, 12, 18. Also I never bothered to break his guard, I just let him heal and saved the head binds to stop lightning storm.

And before I start the pain train again, is there a way to accurately estimate the amount of turns a bind goes on? wouldn't want to waste potential damage by defending when it isn't necessary.
They're guaranteed to last both the turn it was inflicted on, plus the turn right after. Anything past that is luck. They're still absolutely worth using though. Head binds stop his healing, and leg binds stop sky dive I believe.

It's been a while since I played 5, so it could be arm blind. I know something serious it at least. There's VERY few attacks in the game that isn't affected by some bind.

Binds don't wear off mid-turn and they're visible on the enemy while they're applied. I'm struggling to figure out why you need to "estimate" anything.
Binds don't need estimating. Element defense does and I just decided to fuck it in 1 after getting skullfucked by a drake because I don't keep a post-it tag next to me when I play games made after 1989.
