Hell's Kitchen, Superfreighter and Hong Kong are all great.
MJ12 Base/UNTACO was kino.
Love the underwater base and Versalife
Hong Kong, super jumping along rooftops
Paris, avoiding patrols at night, talking in the bar, doing side stuff, pure kino
Paris was pretty solid too.
"Is the wine here any good?"
I liked the missile silo mission.
The one with the underwater base and Hong Kong
Hell's Kitchen

Hong Kong.
Your dropped in a massive hub on the run from the UN, deemed a terrorist by the media, and you have a kill switch ticking in you.
Find Tong.
I can't decide between Versalife, and the ocean lab.
I never asked for this.
Gameplay wise?
The Naval Yard.
Setting wise?
Area 51, duh.
Why does this game's level design go from being so great up until the Naval Yard to overly linear and restrictive, with Vandenberg being the only exception late-game?
The Lebedev mission. Hobos, conspiracies, secret tunnels and revelations. It is absolute perfection.
Hell's Kitchen as a whole is fantastic. Versalife is really cool. Vandenberg is nice. I like the atmosphere in Paris, especially the cathedral and the chateau.
For me, it's Hong Kong and that delightful music
so many good ones!!
really hard to pick as they're all incredible past the hong-kong intro, probably underwater lab or lebedev
The Palisade Bank is the best level in the series.
>Favourite
Humble up and learn to speak proper American on my website you filthy anglo.
>nu-desuex
Loving Every Laugh
That's not a rebuttal. The level is excellent.
DUDE VENTILATION SHAFTS LMAO
nah, it was super easy to get into the vault.
....and?
It's still more complex than anything from DX1.
The new Deus Ex levels aren't as organically designed as the original and whenever you see a vent it feels like the devs deliberately placed it rather than you as the player traversing a real environment.
You guys know any based Deus Ex YT channels like Rahn?
This comment right here about vents
Vandenberg. Those two mechs fighting the big one is really fucking cool.
DX1's environments aren't graphically or mechanically designed in realistic ways at all, what are you smoking?
Fuck, now I have to play this again
HK
I need you to escape. I can cut power to the doors only a few seconds without being detected. Get ready.
Oh my god JC, a bomb!
Hell's Kitchen, Hong Kong, and everything in Paris was pure ludo.
HR really had great leveldesign, with all of the hidden rooms you can get into in cities and whatnot. I feel like devs were mostly inspired with hong kong from DX1, so it was kinda like
>let's make every settlement feel like it
The only issue could be a GPS that ruins your fun, because you don't need to keep orientation while running around those beautiful cities, so you're not focused on all of those nice little details because your center of view stays in the bottom left corner of your display.
i feel that
Vandenberg and versalife labs for gameplay
hong kong and paris streets for atmosphere
>MJ12 Base/UNTACO was kino.
literally got chills the first time I played when I realized what was going on
Vandenberg and VL labs have some top tier atmosphere too
>Graphically
Irrelevant. They're visually sufficient representations.
>Mechanically
A lot of them are literally based on blueprints and the others are designed around similar principles of lived-in, organic spaces you need to traverse rather than simple arenas for mechanics.
It was really interesting, moving through the normal and peaceful hub area with all of the once-friendly NPCs turning hostile.
Don't mind me, just posting the best conversation music
Does unused music count?

Are there any good mods I should install before doing a replay? Haven't played DX1 in nearly a decade.
Vanilla
this part was so good. It was so foreboding in the chateau, just snooping around and finding bits and pieces about the illuminati and the life of one of its members. The icarus messages were so creepy too
You keep telling yourself that. They look like very crude jumbles of large polygons for the most part, big flat bare textures and small numbers of big, flat textured objects. They look empty, unintentionally brutalist and...well, Quake.
And no, they're not. Liberty Island is a massively contrived, nowhere near accurate representation of the actual place, for example. The DX1 levels are much more of the "simple arenas for mechanics" you describe, as their lack of believable graphical fidelity means there's little point in even trying for organic design, which they didn't do. Environments like the Sub Base, the Denfert Rochereau, the Helibase, and Tonnochi Road are obviously contrived for gameplay on their face, it's not even debatable.
I mean, HR literally had Detroit ripping off Hell's Kitchen and Shanghai ripping off Hong Kong. It couldn't get more blatant.
When you break out of MJ12 / Unatco homebase. Always feels good to come out on top as an underdog
Versalife. Great music in the beginning too. I don't know why the rest of that level didn't use it
Because it's an MJ12 Lab, so it gets the MJ12 music.

Carry on, Agent.
Hong Kong hands down because it felt so immense but it was really well made and you didn't get super lost exploring something meaningless.
Fuck Paris.
Everything else was A+
Whoops wrong link!

God I wish invisible war could have been good. Fuck, I enjoyed the shit out of The Nameless Mod because most of the level design was good, you had pretty varied playstyles, and the game had some of that "in the process of becoming sci-fi" look that DX1 did so well.
>Hey guys, for DX2, let's remove skills and skill points, fuck up the inventory system, use universal ammo to deincentivize using varied weapons, turn the augs into a shitpost, break the levels into segments, and completely discard the setting and technological level of the original.
Of course, DX3/4 would still need to do the same thing with the level of technology.
>Hong Kong hands down.
This.
but for Paris - Cathedral was awesome, I don't care what anybody says. Maybe it's because I cheesed Gunter from a vent while he ran around screaming about needing a Skul-gun, I dunno, but I loved that mission.
That's actually a close second for me, then it's good ol
God tier music. Some excellent composers. And it all fit the look, mood and feel so well.
Alexander Brandon
Michiel van den Bos
Dan Gardopee
For some autistic reason, Jonas and some others are revamping The Nameless Mod, so stay tuned.
Damn, I'm hyped already. What are they trying to do?
I don't think it was bad per se it just gave me claustrophobia and i fucking hated being there.
this mod is sick, really glad it's still getting attention
fuck yeah dude
I actually really like Revision Paris. In the original probably the missile base.
Saying Hong Kong kind of feels like cheating, since it serves as both a hub and several 'levels', but it's perfect and Versalife is easily one of the best and most iconic levels ever made. I love all of DX equally though, there's so much variety and the different locations complement each other so perfectly. Paris is excellent too with the catacombs, streets and cathedral and the DuClare mansion rounding it off. Pretty much the whole game are such great examples of level design I still don't quite know today how they pulled it off, only Thief 2 and Dishonored ever reached these heights since, HL2 if we're counting entirely different games. Even the gas station and silo are a nice change of scenery and pace and full of surprises.
I really need to replay this, I think I've forgotten enough of my five playthroughs that it's time again.
Hong Kong. Tonnochi road is full of nooks and crannies to investigate.
Fair assessment. I think if I had to pick a single level, it'd definitely be Area 51 just cause of how exciting the game was and the level delivered on that.
how come no one ever mentions this game predicted an nyc terrorist attack right before 9/11
The stage with the ship that you had to infiltrate and blow up
All of you are wrong. This is the best one:
youtube.com
You literally can't refute this. The part from 0:12 to 0:22 is godly.
>1:15 to 1:27
so many years later every fucking time it gets me
people talk about it all the time, it's just silly to believe the game predicted anything. all the plot points and themes were simply taken from real theories at the time, it didn't really come up with anything. the twin towers just weren't put in the skybox because it had to be kept within a certain dimension.
Because the anthrax attacks literally said it would happen.
Ludo tastes. Level design and integration of the gameplay really is the most important part of vidya.
I'd have to say hong kong is the best level. going under water to get to secret places is just awesome.
MJ12 Base UNATCO, Hell's Kitchen 1 & 3, Hong Kong and Chateau DuClare
My dude the trade center was already the site of a terrorist attack before 9/11 and the idea of islamic terrorism didn't come out of nowhere. The shock was how bad it was. Not that it simply CUD NOT HAPPN.
Deus Ex and a fuckload of other media was drawing on past events for inspiration. Why was no one shocked? Because events happened before 9/11.
I think Vandenberg Tunnels, Hong Kong, the DuClare Chateau and the cathedral are my favourites, but I love the whole game.
>shitting on nu deus ex level design
It's one of the things that is much better in new games than in the first one. Locations in the first game were realistic, and gameplay wise pretty good for their time, but newer games just blow it out of the park. It's one of those things modern immersive sims usually get very right
