Square was never good, nor did it get worse after the merger, the only people who pretend otherwise are disenfranchised FF fans.
The only good franchises Square has ever produced are Mana, SaGa and Front Mission(which wasn't even developed by Square to begin with and when they did try to do so it was fucking crap, unsurprisingly), then there's some sporadic episodes of good games every now and then in a sea of overrated mediocrity, a sea that is also largely forgotten even by those rabid Square advocates since it's so fucking terrible.

FF has 10 games which most people played and enjoyed all of them, while some minority at least love 1 of them and hate the rest.
Vagrant Story, FM3, Musashi, SaGa, Legends of Mana and Parasite Eve are all great games that look and play different, and I'm only mentioning the few I played.

ALL the sequels by Square-Shitrnex ended up being WORSE than the games before the merge.

I pirated this on my Switch, started up with the dancer character because waifu. I was expecting a light hearted JRPG like Bravely Default, I got a bunch of melodramatic bullshit and random battles that take like 5 minutes each. Played up to the end of that girl's first chapter. Does it get better later on or are the other stories and the game as a whole always like this?

The first Musashi was decent, that's why I didn't put it in, but I like how you're subconsciously saying it's a bad game, that was a great slip up.

Every year or so we get some generic, mediocre at best JRPG that the marketers and game "journalists" overhype the fuck out of as a "return to the golden age" because it looks and plays just like games from 20 years ago. i.e Ni no Kuni, Xenoblade, Setsuna, Lost Sphear, the countless bottom of the barrel weebshit on the 3DS and Vita etc.

They need to make a sequel that integrates the character's stories and interactions better and also varies the voice acting, which gets grating.

There are some character interaction scenes later, but for the most part it's pretty nonexistent.

It bombed on PC despite doing well on Switch so it really shows that Switchtards really had nothing to play at the time of its release and would just buy any shovelware to stave off their hunger for new games on Switch.

The combat system is great.
The story is decent, although I'm just starting chapter twos so it's a little early for me to judge.
All in all it's a nice comfy game. I'm enjoying finding new towns and robbing every NPC blind while reading a bit of backstories for them.

The game would almost require a single path of progression to intertwine the character interactions and stories better, as the game is an untethered open world RPG.

It was an alright game overall but for 60 dollars it was a little questionable. Turn based system was effective and engaging enough. Music was great. Art is debatable (I liked it). Characters were likeable but story was overall bad.
