>Farm pure iron Secluded Glade camp near San Matheus. There's a nice little loop circuit that you can take with plenty of enemies and gathering spots if you go east/south-east of it, and one ore gather spot that often has quite a lot of pure. Clear out all the enemies, go back to camp and rest 4 days for the enemies to respawn and 6 for the gather spots to respawn. Rinse and repeat. You can grind it out for effectively infinite xp, gold, ores and other materials.
>Companion attributes They raise their strength/endurance/agility/whatever as you level up. Don't think they can raise themselves in lockpicking/science/craftsmanship and stuff, but they can give you a bonus in it
