I played that one fishing village mission in the first nuXcom and it was really fucking intense. I had split up into two teams: three that stayed outside of the ship and three that went inside. When the antlions started attacking the first squad fairly comfortable got back to the extraction point but my second team had to basically take turns where one would move and the other two would shoot, and basically leapfrog the person furthest behind each round. It was pretty fucking intense. I managed to get every single person back to the extraction point literally at the very last round before everything was nuked. It was pretty great.

I did an ironman run this one time on one of the higher difficulties in the OG X-COM. I went to Cydonia, and lost an uncomfortable number of dudes during the first phase. During the base invasion, things got worse. Things were tense, because failing this meant a Game Over, no loading, just death.
At the last moment, one of my filler agents, some rookie girl in nothing but alloy armor, get it together (stop panicking) and blasts the fuck out of the silacoid chasing her, then kills an ethereal guarding the elevator with her laser rifle, and spots the Brain.
One of my surviving psychics mind controls an ethereal with a blaster launcher, and nukes the fuck out of the Brain and the horde guarding it.

I played the game and it sucked and I lamented the fact there will never be another X-Com/Jagged Alliance game worth a damn.
