How do we save MMORPGs?
MMORPGs
The MMORPG genre has ended peacefully. You can't help them anymore.
They were a poor concept to begin with. Multiplayer RPGs are played as long campaigns, with friends, over LAN or in your mother's basement.
vr and complete immersion. If some dev would create an mmorpg that's so deep you could actually live inside it that developer would drown in neet and normie bux.
The best way to save ALL games is to add more sexy shortstacks.
Am I the only one that's having a blast with Classic?
Play FFXIV
Wheres my can't go home ffxi bros
Just do something different. Maybe figure out some different kinds of progression other than numbers going up.
EvE already did that in 2003.
>Genre focus
Themepark mmos are dead in the water, there can be no innovation in such a stagnant gameplay loop of questing. A focus on a sandbox with player agency taking lead.
>Combat
Tab targeting is a deadend that needs to evolve. But so far nobody has done it correctly. Gameplay always suffers in mmos but its current year and there is no excuse for it. The controls and flow should feel as tight as the best of Souls, Mario or Zelda. Whatever combat system it uses, it needs to not feel like floaty garbage.
>Classes
Go back to D&D. Stop trying to reinvent the fucking wheel. "Play our class its got the Inquishantor look how unique we are". Spend less time thinking of overly fancy ways of saying "This is a fighter" or "This is a wizard" and focus more on making a strong class identiy, with the class having a strong impact on your role, let people be shitty at things, it makes for more impactful gameplay. Don't listen to niggers crying about balance.
Keep the holy trinity, its a meme trying to break away from it. Tanks, healers, dps and support. Again take ideas from tabletop, where classes are unique, have roles but the gameplay doesn't break down completely when one of those roles is missing. Don't do what killed Guild Wars 2 and just make everyone everything.
>Crafting
Deep player crafting, all player ran. Let people go full jew. Housing and cities should be built and placed in the world. The best of the classic MMOs all had one thing in common, they had both.
Get rid of Classes. Fuck the Trinity. Give me freeform attribute/skill/ability building the likes of Asheron's Call.
Fuck Raids and instances. Make the overworld actually interesting and challenging instead of a scenic singleplayer frolick through the woods on the way to the next Raid.
MMORPGS were popular 10 years ago, they aren't anymore.
You just gotta accept the genre you like has become archaic and deal with it. Just like a pretty girl that turned into a 40 year old woman that nobody cares about anymore.
That's it. You gotta accept that shit moved on and all that now remains are the people who like the genre (which is pretty small really)
>Fuck the Trinity
Have you played Guild Wars? Its trash because they tried to break away from the trinity. No guesses to how it worked out. With every class being dps, every class having enough healing to keep itself up, group play was fucking killed. Trash game. Rift is a good example of a trinity expanded somewhat.
>Fuck Raids
Agreed, raiders are incredibly vocal but make up a small portion of any mmo playerbase. Its the autistic screams of raiders that have gotten us into this clone stamp souless design the top mmos (Wow and FFXIV) use.
have the millions of dollars required to invest into mmos that aren't themepark bullshit
Since literally all RPGs have effectively become small team coop games with their tiny 4-8 player raids, fuck the "Massive" part of the game. Give me a fucking minecraft-like game with random adventures and shit to explore/do/build that I can play with a handful of friends. With a small scope like that, you can implement actual fun gameplay like a shooter or a hack&slash.
there are too many MMORPGs on the market. Let it crash
Nobody expects the kickstarter to swoop in and save us all but all the buzz from people who have played it are coming away pretty positive.
mmorpg make money from triple dipping these days, they rape peoples wallets basically.
FFXIV is one of the worst, you have to buy the game, buy expansions every year, pay a monthly subscription or lose all access and it has a shitty cash shop. They also punish you for unsubbing, which makes people not want to return after losing their house.
For hardcore fanboys all this is acceptable abuse, normies will not put up with that level of wallet rape though. The amount of money that game costs is laughable.
My nigger. Its looking really good, like an Everquest 1.5
mmorpg are for middle aged people, everyone else is playing fun games.
mmorpg are grindfests and fuck all else
>Have you played Guild Wars? Its trash because they tried to break away from the trinity.
Both. The Dual-Classing of the first game actually helped diminish the "need" for the Trinity because every class could cover multiple roles quite effectively, covering for others and not being entirely reliant on a rigid class role composition. My buddies and I completed some of the hardest endgame missions with a practical rag-tag group of whatever classes we wanted to roll with.
GW2 claimed to do so by making everybody more or less a self-healing DPS, but almost immediately recanted, instituting pretty standard Trinity mechanics by making some classes tankier and adding more potent other-healing effects.
real life is the ultimate MMORPG
anything else is a fucking childrens' game
more cute boys
Mobile will unironically save MMORPG.
>How do we save MMORPGs
Unironically VR. People want escapism, the idea of a ready player one style game is a no brainer. This is how it'll go down.
>First gen, shitty social experiences that are more a proof of concept than anything else, such as VR chat. We are here.
>Second gen, with better hardware, better controls likely via leap-motion like tracking, you'll be able to do a lot more. OrbusVR and Nostos are doing these at a very basic level, still trash but are legit mmos over something like VR chat.
>Third gen, hardware and software now to a point where VR is comfortable, affordable, and a basic standard. This is where wow-like levels of scope will come.
Everyone posting in this thread will be dead before third gen though.
Can't wait to ERP in it.
EXTERMINATE ALL MANLET RACES
I wanna hug_ the short one with the big hair.
Pantheon won't draw new players, it will just take players from a small number of older mmorpgs (and honestly not many will move to it).
Also the mmorpg market consists of lots of different kinds of people. The people who play Gw2, Black desert, Tera, WoW and FF14 are mostly different kinds of customers. If Gw2 or Tera were to close, those players aren't going to move to a subscription mmorpg for instance.
FF14 lives and breathes off wow scraps, they aren't going to convert f2p or b2p mmorpg players to paying a monthly subscription in large numbers.
>play Necromancer in mmo.
>you can only summon 1 (one) skeleton.
Man, any time I got into a 1v1 pvp situation in GW2, it just felt like two Highlanders going at each other with baseball bats. I had a solid ten minute fight with a dude in WvW before I just stopped attacking and did nothing but heal. Then he stopped attacking. Then we just paused for a moment, and went our separate ways.
How does it punish you for unsubbing?
>Pantheon won't draw new players
Who cares about new players. If someone thinks saving the mmorpg genre involves getting 10mil+ players, they are retarded. That popularity is what killed the genre in the first place.
>Play a necromancer in mmo
>its a mage but its firebolt is purple
Housing gets deleted if you're not subbed (And enter the house) for something like 60 or 90 days. Its a just scam to get people to keep dripping them money.
It is very easy. You need to hire me as a game designer and fund my project.
>play necromancer in mmo
>you cannot summon skeleton and they just give you ghost shaped spell and life steal.
>play a shaman
>its a mage with electric bolts
Went back to Wow a few months back. What the fuck did they do to the classes.
You're basically asking "How do we save radio?" or even "How do we save cable TV?" when the answer is as obvious as it is with those questions.
The answer, of course, is that WoW isn't a game. You would know that if you weren't a fucking newfag.
Thoughts on Crowfall? Sounds really cool on paper but iirc there's been quite a lot of delay and
>kickstarter mmo
Begone zoomer.
That's basically it. It SOUNDS really good but in practice the game is pretty dogshit and they are moving more and more away from the mmo aspect. Not worth paying attention too, just like Ashens of Creation the devs have fucked it all up.
FFXIV is the only MMO that seems to actively reward you for unsubbing. There's no value in anything in the game outside of the experience of a boss fight, the experience of going through a story, and glamours, and each of those become exponentially easier to acquire with every patch after it's released.
Want to experience the story? Wait til the next expansion pack comes out, then play through the previous MSQ with massively increased EXP gain and free items given out to rush players through.
Having trouble with a boss? Wait a few patches for the echo and free higher level gear to completely trivialize it.
Having trouble farming a drop to glamour? Same as above, unsub for a few patches and you can probably solo the content unsynced with free welfare gear.
There's no such thing as "strong" or "rare" gear in this game, considering how every two patches all player advancement (Which is exclusively how high your ilvl is) gets reset.
LFG for dumpster behind Denny's parking lot. Attempting racoon boss, need two rangers, pls text gearscore to kyle.
Serious question:
Why do you want to make mmorpgs popular again? Aren't you just happy playing the shit you have already? There is a shit load of choice now and they are all profitable still, just play those.
I'm waiting for Mabinogi to be ported to android.
Meme opinion or not, but I enjoy GW2.
It's fluid and casual enough for me, since I don't have all that much time.
People play them to be the first to get to the top (max. level, highest-tier equipment). Once they've done that, there's no more appeal to the game. They need a new one.
They want to play them for a month and then move onto another one.
Nu-Devcat has no idea what made the original iteration of Mabinogi good, just accept that the game is dead. Look at how aggressive the monetization is in the desktop version of the game, now just imagine how the mobile version will be.
Zoom zoom zoom
I really wish this wouldn't go to shit. But we all know how community funded projects turn out.
Sounds interesting but the devs are shit, big chance the game will be shit too. Has been in dev for AGES aswell
Maybe you're too young to remember, but MMOs weren't always just a race to the top/finish line, "haha my gear is better than yours" grindfest. That all came with World of Warcraft.
The first major MMO, Ultima Online, was really just a glorified chat room, but it was a complete world in and of itself. There were tons of things you could do that had nothing to do with grinding skills. For fucks sake, I used to spend hours sitting in a tavern, drinking ale and offering to play chess with anyone who walked in. I joined a guild who made a name for themselves as a gambling ring. I sailed the ocean and if I ran into anyone, I'd park my boat up next to them and throw a party.
None of that had an end goal, you played just for the joy of playing.
Fucking World of Warcraft/EverQuest invented the "theme park" MMO and, little did we know it, that marked the beginning of the end for MMOs. WoW took up all the air in the room. Everyone wanted to be them and get rich. All of them had slightly different takes on the same old bland recipe.
The earlier user was correct: theme park MMOs are cancer. The future of MMOs, small/niche though it may be, is in sandbox, open world, immersive games, with majority (90+%) player driven events/stories.
The Repopulation was cool, and then HeroEngine shat the bed and the devs never recovered. Crowfall is supposed to be a spiritual successor to Shadowbane, but every patch takes the devs further away from what Shadowbane was all about: player choice, freedom, and politics. Crowfall has goal-oriented gameplay, Shadowbane had no goals apart from what you the player wanted.
No more fucking dungeons or raids. No more set quests. Make most or all loot player created (like Eve). Give the players the tools, and they'll make their own fun. Stop wasting time and money telling players how to have fun and just let them have fun, for fucks sake.
>Play Necromancer in Guild Wars 1
>Have a dozen little flesh bone horror monsters swarming everything and creating more undead with each enemy you kill
>Play Necromancer in Guild Wars 1
>just spend all day head-banging and playing air-guitar
Everquest was okay in the beginning before the neckbeards ruined it.
Thanks Tigole, screeching about Raids all day on the EQ forums. He then went on to help work on the genre-ruining WoW and has now fucked Overwatch into oblivion.
My own take is there should be less focus on the massive part and more focus on the multiplayer / cooperative part. I think it's a lot easier to make an RPG that focuses more on what it takes to work together. Smaller communities will also foster rivalries between factions etc. because you get to know your enemies better.
Also, crafting needs a fucking overhaul. Tired of it being so static.
Bring back puzzle pirates, fucking over the poker table every Friday was peak online gaming
Uh ha ha *yikes* buddy, you want an MMORPG based around -multiplayer-? Talk about cringe! It's 2019 man, get with the times!
It's a dead genre.
you need first to remove ERPfaggots trannies and discord
so yeah pretty much impossible
It's simple, just make Log Horizon.
remove all filler quests, quests should be rare and meaningful
single server
make leveling take many months of dedicated grinding with a group again
endgame progression should not be in any way time gated or possible to cap out on. There are multiple methods of this. pvp based endgame is of course easy to make open ended, pve based endgame can depend on simple diminishing returns but constant and capless upgrading/improvement.
There should be a 'strongest character in the game' and everyone should know who it is.
There should be no advantage or reason to ever make an alt, people need to be their character, not the player who has many characters.
i am loving this character design
there is a cross platform EVE clone coming out in a few days
its sure to be shit but its free
just letting people know, its called second galaxy
MMOs weren't fixed with classic? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OH SHIT LOL HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH
You faggots will never realise that MMOs are dead, it's like watching a bird fuck a rock.
Another flash in the pan just like Albion that everyone will drop in 2 months and we will see a ton of youtube videos like "Why did Pantheon fail?" all over the place.
MMOs are dead.
There's specialized guilds that handle that shit bruh
albion failed because its devs wanted to focus on the 5v5 meme when the entire appeal of pvp mmos is large scale combat and open world combat
>buy expansions every year
Why do you do that? Go on the internet and outright lie?
>implying that matters
Pantheons appeal to boomer "sandbox" features that all of these 5th generation MMOs are trying to pull has only caused failure.
The truth is, time killed MMOs. It's an antiquated way to play a multiplayer game. There are simpler and more efficient ways to play with lots of people that don't involve a giant map, and one server. And no one is willing to make anything new in fear of failure; which is understandable. MMOs are dead jim.
add gobbos.
i expect pantheon to fail based on the fact that its higher rank pledged reward additional character slots.
any mmo with a focus on making alts is garbage
MMOs are for more than playing with lots of people, they are for existing within a virtual world. The problem is mmos have not been designed with this intention since the 90s, and so most people have never even played an mmo that was truly designed to be a simulated relatiy
Expand technology until you have actual, fucking functiona Virtual Reality MMOs.
Until then, the genre can go fuck itself with a lemon-juiced cactus.
That is pretty bad too, there is just so many ingredients to making something successful and too many ways to make a fucking stink in the MMO genre that it's going to be hard to ignite a new game with a healthy community and sustainability.
ok maniac
cope or rope
>Go back to D&D. Stop trying to reinvent the fucking wheel. "Play our class its got the Inquishantor look how unique we are". Spend less time thinking of overly fancy ways of saying "This is a fighter" or "This is a wizard"
My Eldritch knight says hi.
Fuck MMOs. Yea Forums cube world server when?
Holy trinity is tied with theme parks mmo and instanced contect.
You don't need a holy trinity that sucks, you end with 3 classes that are the best at that role. You need iconic classes thats true.
>Eldritch Knight
>Weapon Bond a Javelin
>Throw the same spear at everyone and summon it back to you over and over
Good times
