Dragon Quest XI

I just finished the demo, what did you guys think of it?

IMO, the Draconian Quest options should be tried by everyone picking the game up, because otherwise the game more or less plays itself. I put on "gains no XP from weaker monsters" and it manages to keep the game at a nice moderate difficulty. The rest is pretty nice all around, the graphics look pleasant and I like the town design. Let's hear what you have to say.

Loved it more than the pc version.
Probably just the way I played it with the controller and such and it seemed more consistent with the framerate than my PC despite the decreased graphics. 2d mode is a nice bonus.

Great game, really funny and not overly-complicated; all I changed was turning on the traditional RPG battle system

Also, the fact that this game runs so well on the Switch is a crime

Yeah I finished the demo just this afternoon too. Bloody generous demo too - I got 10 hours out of it. I'm a little bummed out I have to wait another month to get it, but I told myself I would hold out for a Switch version and damnit I'm sticking to my guns on that.

Mine actually took 6h45~m to beat the demo, I was really surprised considering I tried to pick up all the optional content along the way and explore every nook. It was still really generous for what it is.

reminder that 2D mode give us real DQ combat back instead of that retarded one action at a time crap

I recommend at least turning on Harder Monsters, it does kinda make a certain side challenge really difficult since it affects all fights
I beat the whole game with Harder Monsters + No Grinding Low Level Mobs

Well I take my time with RPGs. I explore every nook & cranny of the fields & towns, I was having a good time playing with the forge (a big improvement over the Alchemy Pot) plus I probably spent an hour grinding just because Dragon Quest has me hardwired to do that after nearly three decades.

I saw someone described harder monsters as essentially the game's own hard mode. That could be neat, but as someone inexperienced with RPGs I don't see how it amounts to much more than running out of healing items more often since, like on a normal mode, it's still your best option to just find the best equipment and mash attack in most fights. It changes bosses a lot, without a doubt, but outside of that I'm not sure if it adds much.

Boring.

Your best option for normal fights is proper use of crowd control abilities not just mashing attack.

Like how?

Snooze and Fuddle are extremely reliable at stopping normal enemeis
Thwack is good for big groups
etc
Preventing damage altogether is a lot better than burning a gorillion herbs.

I'm a pleb when it comes to jrpgs but I like how easy it is and the fact that you can put it on autopilot if you get tired of killing weak enemies over and over
I know it's a retarded opinion but I usually dislike jrpgs but I don't mind DQ11, probably for this reason

Use spells that affect groups of or all enemies in a battle, gets weapons that do damage for whole groups like the boomerang or whip (haven't played XI, but I assume these are in there).
In fights with stronger enemies, you also need to make sure you have a dedicated buff/debuff person. In DQV for example, my main group was Madason/Perry/Madchen/Saber for the third act, Madason was the heavy, Perry was healer/second heavy, Madchen was the chick who buffed everybody and Saber just attack (on a boss, I'd have him focus every other turn).
People honestly don't give turn based enough credit for how much it can rely on strategic loadouts and tactics, they usually think you just have to mash attack.

Whips are kinda shit in XI sadly. Sylvando uses them best but he has non-weapon dependent moves that do better, and Veronica has all the strong AoE spells and no strength so there's little reason to ever give her a whip.

Interesting, thanks
>People honestly don't give turn based enough credit for how much it can rely on strategic loadouts and tactics, they usually think you just have to mash attack.
Yeah, though these same people probably get turned off by the lack of options in the early game and stop playing before there's really a chance for their options to open up. By the end of the demo here you have one heavy and another guy (Erik) who can use knives or boomerangs (possibly more), so you get the option to split up damage or concentrate it, which already adds to your amount of options. But it takes time for that aspect of the game to fully develop, so I think it could put people off initially.

I played a demo in a con and it starts from a desert area and ends with a boss (or mini-boss?) fight with a scopion. Im not into turn base to be fair but the combat is kinda mediocre. Its just use buff/skills and heal when needed. That sand bug fight was such a bore snore.

>Draconian quest can be removed in the areas where you can save the game
>it's also hard mode
>but also some other joke modes
it triggers some autism in me that I have to turn it off because it looks terrible, but if it was in the options menu or elsewhere I would leave it on, especially if it was just called Hard mode.

Maybe if you didnt play on a toaster.
Pc version with orchestral mod is the best version, you can play with a controller and you can have over 120fps

I played the first five minutes then deleted it because I have other things on my backlog that I want to finish before it launches.

If you disable it you can no longer re enable

Its very fun but I can't fucking play it because it keeps crashing. It crashed three times for me in the area where you get the red orb.

Do you even know how Draconian Quest works? You don't have all options on, you can just pick the ones you want. You don't have to have the joke modes on if you don't want them.

Is there a way to get it to not keep the Draconian indicators onscreen at all times? It's like playing with a pop-up ad you can't block.

Yeah, it's in the settings menu.

There's an option to turn it off somewhere, dig around the settings.

Thanks, I apparently missed it.

With Tougher Monsters, does the difficulty ramp up a lot after where the demo ends? Because otherwise I felt pretty comfortable with four party members at level 12.

The demo leaves off before you face the first real difficult boss of the game. And a few bosses later you fight one that will probably dictate whether you really want to continue with Stronger Enemies or not.

I just downloaded the demo earlier and I don't see the appeal at all. It's one of the most boring games I've ever played, and the VA and music are a constant assault on the ears. The gameplay seems alright, I get that DQ games are fairly true to retro JRPGs. I guess it has charm going for it, but I doubt charm can carry me through an 80 hour game.

zoom, zoom

>Also, the fact that this game runs so well on the Switch is a crime
shame about the resolution and godawful textures. I wish they let us see at least a bit of the 2D mode.

>anyone who criticizes based and epic dragon quest is a zoomer
seething

If you're referring to the notification in the top-left of the screen, you can disable that in the Misc. menu.
You don't literally need to cancel your Draconian Quests because of a text prompt.

I'm not sure why you dislike the music. As a whole though, the selling point is that it's an unashamedly simple and traditional JRPG in every aspect. At first, that sounds kind of dreadful, but then you see more of the world, find really cool areas like Hotto (the japan town), see the writing and characters develop, and it warms up to you. I'll admit liking experimental RPGs more, but once you realize how well-executed the game is in most aspects it becomes pleasant.

You are itty-bitty baby.

Looks like I touched a nerve. Run along now little zoom.

I didn't like it at first but its growing on me.

Any other games like it on switch?
Nothing too complicated.

Buying it just for the speedup option in combat. That shit is saving me so much time in the demo.

These arent arguements. The game plays like a dated jrpg: boring chosen hero plot with boring turn base rpg.

>all I changed was turning on the traditional RPG battle system
I don't actually understand why anyone would want to not use this. What's the point of your character moving around to begin with?

Zooooom

It lets you pretend you're playing a game made after 2010

Thats fine
I played Minecraft recently for the first time and also didnt see the appeal at all
Opinions

Octopath Traveler maybe, it also has a long-ass demo.

Octopath I guess, if you want more of the deliberate retro throwback style.

Its in there because of Dragon Quest X, where it does matter but you know DQ can rarely drop something entirely once its been introduced
Unlike pokemon games DQ games keep building up on top of each other

Even zoomers like DQ, especially because of Toriyama's DB. He just have shit taste.

Are you retarded or cannot make any valid arguments?
Have fun wasting away your life with a +100 hr game padded with grinding and piss easy boss fights.

I feel like I'm too spoiled by modern RPG design to appreciate DQ as a newcomer. It's a story I've played a thousand times before with the most barebones turn based system imaginable. If I'm going to play a contemporary turn based JRPG, it better bring something interesting to the table.

You just proved you know nothing about the game.

zoom along, lil zoom

>what did you guys think of it?
Terrible translation. Mediocre music. The game itself is alright but the translation ruins it.

I was having fun, but I couldn't stand the stupid music loops.

I recommend lowering the music volume in the options game gets comfier

Challenge in RPGs are most often about how well you can handle contingencies without dying, grinding or running back to a heal spot.

>terrible translation
My main complaint is that you can't change the text language to Japanese, but that's not uncommon with international releases of Japanese games so it's not exactly surprising. Part of me wants to import from Japan, but part of me also wants to support international sales of DQ games.

Which is what? I played two demos of the game covering different sections and thought it was the most stale and generic jrpgs I have ever tried.

>Too easy with Tough Monsters off
>Too hard with Tough Monsters on

I was level 9 or so and I was completely fucking stonewalled at the Griffin Temple.

I'm into it but there are a few things that bother me. The movement feels wooden and imprecise. The resolution on switch is pretty bad, and doesn't improve in docked mode. Objects render late and enemies can disappear too soon. Most enemy encounters are optional. You can just run from basically everything. The background textures are muddy as hell. The english/austrailian accent voice acting is often cringey.

Also there doesn't really seem to be any challenge to anything. The game basically plays itself and holds your hand the whole time. It kind of feels like a little kid's game.

It's so goddamn boring
Also unequipping clothes doesn't actually change your model, stupid

>Zoomers
>Dragon Ball
DB is older than DQ, user. Also, not only young people can enjoy Toriyama's art.

I literally grew up with Quake LAN parties. Mostly because that's what we had in school's antiquated computer room, but still.

That's why you do it at level 10 when Erik learns Rubblerouser where the DoT effectively acts as a third attacking party member. You could go one step further and go into the fight already pepped up so you can use Scorched Earth which is a much more powerful DoT and is applied to both Grim Gryphons rather than having to cast Rubblerouser twice.

I'm not paying money for this game.
fuck martina, but not literally.
screw that whore.

The consistant stutters while docked is a big let down, especially after playing the PC version at 100 fps+.

Ultra fast battles are a nice addition though.
