If you want a greatsword to be fun for the player, make its moveset feel like an axe moveset.

I don't recommend a greatsword for chopping wood personally.

More like a sword + spear moveset.

>use axe, has 1h sword moveset
>use 2h sword, has 1h sword moveset
>use spear, has 1h sword moveset

Just make it slow but also obliterate obstacles and get stuck in walls

Greatsword isn't slow.

Not in reality, but reality is lame.

I don't mean "slow for real life" I mean "slow for a vidyagaem"

That's fine, if you want actual sword swords we get the Dragonslayer/Buster Sword-type for that.

>sword swords
err, slow swords

PSA for game devs:

Greatswords aren't designed like axes at all. They don't handle the same, swing the same, feel the same in the grip, weigh as much.

This is like saying a speedboat should move like an escalator.

You nigger need to play Outward.

Wouldn't a greatsword only feel like an axe if you were holding it by the blade so all the weight was on the other end?

None of this sounds good

Yeah but nobody cares about that, it's not like there's many games that have realistic greatswords either way.
What made me have this thought today was using Dante's Devil Sword in MHW in axe mode, the greataxe animations and huge impacts felt so satisfying with a fuck ass gigantic sword.

Made me really wish more stupid oversized greatswords like the ones in Dark Souls for example could have this much impact to their swings.

>equip longsword
>it's just a onehanded sword
I hate how this is the norm. It's like picking up a weapon called 'rifle' and it's just a pistol.

Why? But the greatsword feels like a greatsword.

An axe is something that needs a big, ponderous windup to apply all the force into the very end of it. A sword is something you slash with and can use the entire length of the blade. A lot of the blade movement comes more from pivoting.

The whole muh greatsword impact is basically wrong.

If you want muh impact, get a maul.

Again, my advice to Outward stands.

>durr make all weapons the same

youtube.com/watch?v=NZTAiqrzL3Y
Outward fan here, check video and be amazed.

Based german dev.

Not enough games with proper slow huge swords that actually feel like they have some weight.

>50 dollydoos for a poor mans DeS/DD
nah

Slow huge swords are retarded and don't fit swords.

You want hammers, not swords.

What the hell is a proper slow huge sword? Swords aren't slow.

Why? It's open world and not like DeS/DD.

Most hammers aren't slow, huge, long or sharp enough, though.

They are if they're taller and wider than you. Never said I want a realistic sword.

But the sword the OP posted is not one of those, it's just a regular old greatsword. Not taller or wider than its wielder at all.

Kids, we want big honking giga swords, not the historically accurate toothpicks you use for LARPing and HEMA orgies.

Just give Greatsword sweeping attacks like the Montante handles irl. """"Greatswords"""" at most weight 8lbs and the freakish for show swords at 10lbs were never actually used.

I have yet to see a game handle Longswords correctly too. Most of the time its a longer 1H sword with the same moveset.
It drives me up a fucking wall.

Enjoying the taste of those crayons buddy?

Sure, that's why I was replying to a post mentioning Dragonslayer and Buster Sword.
A decent example of the kind of huge sword I like is also the Monster Hunter series greatsword.

You think crayons are for eating? How dumb are you?

Great Sword and the zweihander in DeS? Too bad the weight is shit and feels like swinging a pool noodle that phases through them. Adding ragdolls to the point of contact or whipping off limbs would go a long way to justify their power.

>Most hammers aren't slow, huge, long or sharp enough, though.
Things that are long and sharp aren't slow.

>muh realism, swerds arent slew IRL so i can't suspend my disbelief or understand why something doesn't strive to be a 1:1 replication of reality
You want realistic melee combat, you fucking autists? Enjoy being a malnourished fucking peasant with a club getting BTFO by longbows and crossbows from hundreds of feet away. That's realistic melee combat.

Yeah OK, we are just saying that look retarded.
Play Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Yeah I play Outward, Mountain Blade and Kingdom Come so I do enjoy that.

That's fucking gay. I want a game that does the swordmaster archetype but with proper Longswords/War Swords.
I'm fucking tired of gay samurai weeaboos with their pig steel katanas zipping all over the place while the western Knight archetype is always this heavy and slow shit which is so far from the truth.

Longswords are generally lighter than Katana even. And the Grratsword dreck you want works better with giant Mauls, hammers or War Spikes.
Swords are meant for quick attacks and stabbing, not grabbing a 100lb slab of iron and using all your energy for one attack.

>being afraid of difficulty.

Like this?

Attached: 1525588954637.jpg (800x826, 274K)

>longswords are lighter than katana.
They aren't actually. Because katanas are actually pretty darn small. They're one handed swords.

Here it is, here he reveals himself to be a retarded redditor and skallagrim nuthugger. Jesus fucking christ i hate you fucking "people". Realism-faggotry has ruined videogames.

Attached: Nofun_robot.jpg (448x473, 60K)

>pure stanless steel

Every fucking time.

you think that's bad? here's the abomination who USES it.

Attached: 1559673111070.jpg (2340x1700, 2.43M)

>wanting stains on your steel

Looks like some aztec shit

Whine all you like but at the end of the day, Ninja Gaiden is better than anything you could dream up.

That's a cute little dagger you have there. Or is it a butter knife?

I want realistic games though, they are cool and educational.

So just play it and spare me the bullshit?

You're supposed to pancake them with the zweihander dummy, how else can you be satisfied?

The highlander in For Honor has a great moveset.

I don't. I want videogames to be fun escapism. If i wanted to learn HEMA, i would go to a HEMA-gym and learn. If i wanted to be lectured about power + privilege and learn about the historically marginalized group's plights i would listen to a TED-talk. Realism = good is a fallacy, and it's ruining videogames just as much as social justice garbage and microtransactions, if not more.

Attached: Tired.jpg (400x288, 27K)

Dude who the fuck cares about realism.

We don't have a HEMA gym here actually, and there's nothing wrong with having the correct greatsword movesets in game because it's actually cool and functional.

Your big giga greatswords IRL and it's called a two handed hammer or maul.
>Realism = good is a fallacy, and it's ruining videogames just as much as social justice garbage and microtransactions, if not more.
Lawl, social justice shit argues that vidya is fantasy so ANYTHING goes.

I care.

I hope you never get what you want then. Realism kills games.

I don't see what you mean, all of my favorite games teach me something and it's not LOL so randumb.

I can't think of a single game that shoots hard for realism and isn't boring as fuck.

Uh, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Outward, Mount & Blade: Warband, that's 3.

Skipped the first it looked boring as fuck. Haven't played the second. The third is far from realistic and wouldn't benefit from more realism and the combat is the weakest part of the game.

>furcadia
oh damn
i wonder, is that shit still going?

>no halfswording
>no pommel strikes
>no figure eight swing pattern
“Hurr treat it like an axe”
No.

>Hates: People who judge art

Attached: laughing rangas.gif (200x200, 742K)

Mount and Blade has a realistic combat system much more than the majority of the market.
>and wouldn't benefit from more realism
Actually it would, especially about armor system.
>and the combat is the weakest part of the game.
You spend the majority of the game in combat.

Anyone who judges art wouldn't waste their time on that thing.

I'm aware. And the combat is the weakest part.

OK, to each their own, user.

The combat is still the weakest part of the game, regardless of how much time is spent in it.

How is the combat the weakest part of the game?

If it is, nobody would even play MnB since that's what you spend the majority of time doing.

Look I'd love it if the combat was better. But it's really rough around the edge.

>to her the touchest battles.

Attached: 1552105705565.jpg (450x536, 204K)

I finished it and I didn't like it.

It's the weakest part because after about 3 or 4 battles, you have a setup that just wins all the time without really trying at all levels of difficulty. Find a hill, archers behind melee, cavalry on follow, flank the enemy, rinse, wash, repeat. Sieges are all the same as well. Put your most badass dudes up front, archers on the ground, and just push. Once you get your stupidly strong character into the safest part of the fray, you just hack up all the dudes you can, retreat to drag reinforcements in circles, and repeat until your army breaks through.

It's garbage, and the biggest reason people play the game is for the story behind whatever they make for the character. Combat is actually fucking terrible, and if it was removed but still had the outcomes in auto-resolve that people with IQ above room temperature get when they play out a battle, no one would play through it except people that want to delude themselves into thinking recreating an assembly line means they're skilled.

Damn this artist makes some great designs.
