You can still fight with other players and even transfer and share digimon between devices now. All this does is let people who are stuck in the middle of nowhere with no one else to be able to get some more out of what is an extremely niche thing.
Personally I wouldn't have bought one if they didn't add that because it's not a cultural phenomenon now. It's a weird little nostalgic curiosity and very few will have these.
So why did I get it? For that little nostalgia kick I guess and to see what other digimon I may be able to get.
