Well this was a gigantic waste of time. I was planning on staying a full year but thank god my trip is being cut short. I want to go home.

If you study kanji along the rest of the kanji then it's going to take at least 3 times longer.
Self study is always better maybe start studying really hard on your own, go to /djt/ in /int/ or /jp/ and read the guide posted on the OP to see how to effectively learn on your own.

Three years of self-study and feeling like I wasn't improving at all is what made me take the leap towards a Japanese school in Japan. They threw me in the very first level and I realized I didn't know shit about anything. Self-study is a fucking meme.
I'm sure I would reach a decent level of Japanese if I stuck through the entire course, but after 5 months of making no friends, no girlfriend, no job, absolutely no prospects since my degree doesn't translate here etc. I just don't see the point of being here anymore.
