See Sundered; stationary things look good, but when they're moving smoothly interpolated at the game's frame rate then the 10 fps animations look weird.

It's been so long that I've seen some nicely animated keyframed stuff. I played through Jak and Daxter again recently and was super impressed by the animations. Shit holds up well even today.

I think the real thing is that mocapped animation and rotoscoped animation lack a lot of the appeal that you get from hand made animation.Handmade is all about recreating what the brain EXPECTS, rather than what is really supposed to be happening.

So I think to bridge that gap, mocap actors should probably exaggerate more and try and bring the 12 principles into their performance, or that sort of thing should be incorporated on the animator's side. It could be argued that it's not super realistic and they're going for a realistic performance, but even shit like Halo 3 was keyframed and hand done. It all depends on how involved you want it to look. And at this point, companies don't want any involvement because it costs extra.

I'd like to see something like Metal Slug be done in a non-pixel style for sure, but most games feel a bit uncanny when the 2D stuff get's too high fidelity, less control over every detail I guess. Kind of why flash games can have really good art but still look a bit fucked during gameplay.

Motion captured animation for non-realistic art styles looks very stiff and uncanny.
Any basic animation course will tell you what effective animation styles exist, and they all consist of similar elements of squash, stretch, exaggeration, etc. These are all elements that get lost through rotoscoping live action footage. Or it's better to say they aren't made in the first place.

Theres this lady that worked on Into the Spiderverse that posted some videos a while back of side by sides of her doing her own reference videos and using them as bases for animating characters in the movie. It's because there's a lot of jitter inherent in mocap performances.
I think most of the time nowadays the data is cleaned up via algorithms and not by hand so when it's cleaned up, a lot of nuance is lost because it's interpreted as noise.
So when that shit is gone, everything looks stiff. Animators aren't really going to bother putting that back in because it's extra work and they have to ship a game to make the shareholders happy.

Studio probably blew half their budget on this.

To be fair, Miura has said that he's decided how he wants it to end and is actively moving the story there. All hiatuses are likely due to planning and pre-production, since he seemingly makes chapters a year in advance. I remember that a picture of his studio released,. and a picture of Casca's dream sequence was in his studio a literal year before the chapter ever released.

In the Audio Commentary for Heart of Ice Bruce Timm talks about an animation studio called Spectrum. It was made up of guys that left TMS. He said they ended up going belly up because they would always go way beyond what they were suppose to. In Heart of Ice they were just suppose to draw an outline to indicate Freeze's helmet. However one of them ended up hand painting the frost effect on every cell.

There are good examples of rotoscoping (A Scanner Darkly, that old Lord of The Rings cartoon thing etc) but it is also often used as a shortcut by people who just want to get shit done quickly or cost-efficiently. The same thing happens with puppet animation and tweening, and as such they get a bad reputation because people are much louder about the negative examples rather than the positive.

Action scenes and super extravagent shit always get lauded as these amazing spectacles of animation, and they are dont get me wrong, but minute actions like dialogue and even just standing are severely unappreciated in animation circles.

To sort of add to this, 2D animation is arguably easier to do than 3D at the highest level nowadays. Is 2D tedious and time consuming? Yeah obviously, but as 3D improves and audience expectations grow higher, budgets, the skills, time, and amount of people required to animate a movie grow exponentially.

The '94 Lion King cost 76 Million in today's money, 45 Million at the time. The new CGI 2019 Lion King cost fucking 260 Million.

It's not an issue of cost or ease at all, and anyone parroting that needs to be fucking gunned down. 3D is overtaking 2D in video games because it's easier to transition animations and account for player agency, as well as only needing one model for every animation. In movies that is absolutely not the case.

If people went to see 2D, they would still make 2D.

Another thing with 3D is that studios are always having to develop new technologies to stay ahead of the game.
2D doesn't really have to, but if they want to do more complicated shots they can use/make tools to assist. For the tree surfing scenes in Tarzan, they developed a new digital painting tool so that they can make moving backgrounds with complex shots, but a majority of the film is still good old mastery of the craft.

Not to mention in 3d games a lot of animations and shit are done procedurally.
You only need 1 or 2 keys for a full animation. Then you can just fine tune it by messing with the interpolation to create a full action.

I don't remember if Overgrowth was hated or not here, but there was a really good talk about how the animations and stuff for the game were made. A lot of it were just single poses that are blended between on the fly.

That tool they used for Tarzan and later Treasure Planet is honestly miles ahead of the modern day attempts to integrate 2d and 3d together. It's aged obviously but still looks way better than a lot of stuff now.

Devil May Cry 5 is probably the most notable modern example of this technique actually. Animation cancels are blended into the animations to make a procedural transition animation to keep it from looking jerky and weird with the realistic graphics.

People can try but the effort isn't worth it anymore. I remember meeting a low-end disney animator (i.e. grunt work) in 2010 while attending a group interview for Radio Shack in Los Angeles. Gave me a low down on the obvious issue of 3D domination, but 2D (besides the flash stuff) was shot in the foot in the U.S. and Canada because of union rules where animators had to be paid a certain amount regardless if they were okay with being paid lower. I animate for a relatively well-known studio, does only TV/ Netflix stuff, and the quota is a loy for a week, like 450 frame, which would be impossible in most complex shots as we have to hand in the scene complete, all inbetweens and in color too, so we have to use pre-made builds. It sure is fast but I feel like a machine, there is NO time to do it completely redrawn and it usually looks "good enough".

Wish I was born 25 years earlier, not even meme-ing. I worked with paper for a while (Like a year and a half) and it was the SOULest thing ever, was so happy.
