Publishers make it their business to make sure that a game gets through the door and generates a strong profit for the shareholders as well. There's a reason why industry "giants" like Inafune or Tim Schafer had to go on kickstarter and there's also a reason why both their attempts at striking out in the industry crashed and burned too.

EGS "buys" X copies of the game, giving the devs that much money, and then they claim the game sold Y copies on the EGS, where Y is X + the actual copies sold outside of EGS' deal amount. So when EGS says Infinifactory sold 502,304 copies, it's actually 500,000 worth of bullshit that EGS gave them in the deal, and 2,304 copies that people actually bought.
It's straight up misrepresentation and shouldn't be legal.

Again, I think that if they have "purchased" copies internally and have paid taxes on them then they are in the clear and no one will be able to argue against that. However if they are offering a flat rate on game exclusivity and conflating that with "sales" then that is most likely something that could be argued against in court. Because steam is a pretty great platform with a lot of nice features and I have a library of over 900 games that I'm quite happy with.
None of the alternative platforms are even close to as nice as steam aside from maybe GOG Galaxy, but I also buy games from them as well.

Valve doesn't "Own everything", they basically just take a cut from the devs in return for all of the baked in features of steam and having a platform to distribute their game. As a customer I get a place where I can store all of my game CD keys, you probably don't remember but back in the day steam was more of a back up than anything. You would buy a PC game and you could slap that key into steam and it would be added to your library, you never had to and still don't have to spend the money on steam to get the game. Its really not Valve's fault that their service was so convenient that publishers and devs stopped doing standalone releases and just released their games directly to steam, they didn't force anyone to do that.

The actual alternative to "Valve owning everything" is not a fuckload of other virtual launchers with arbitrary exclusivity deals. The answer to this is devs just releasing the games in a fucking case with physical copy of the game on an USB drive or some gay shit and a CD key that you can redeem on any launcher that has the game. Literally no one benefits from games being arbitrarily locked on platforms that are objectively shitty compared to the competition.
If you for some reason really like the Epic Game Store then you should be free to use it, but its bullshit that they keep buying up games and trying to foster this retarded "competitive" bullshit on an open platform like PC.

If Epic wants to compete with steam they should be a good service that people want to use more than steam, not paying devs to release on literally everything but steam.

Shit like the steam friends list, the forums, workshop, and all the other dumb shit you can do on steam is just free for every publisher and user. You don't get any of this shit on EGS, sure the publisher gets a slightly bigger cut per unit sold, but the experience for the user is ultimately worse and the publisher would have to pay out of their own pocket to have those features available to players on PC.

In 2019, Steam has added a bunch of features, and since it's the leading digital store on PC, people have come to expect those as well. If EGS comes by and offers nearly none of those things, there's no reason for people to use it. Either they pirate or they use Steam, or some other store that also bothered with being up to date with what people in 2019 need.
