Elves in most settings either have reached perfection is most things, want to be left alone or strive to create more perfection.
What makes Elves interesting for me is that manners and a decent presentation is key.
Of course they look down upon races that are outright barbaric or too busy with petty quarrels and pointless ideas of heroism in a world that constantly creates new dangers.
A human or orc may slay a dangerous dragon and then dies off old age thinking he lived the life of a mighty hero. For an elf this is merely one small threat less and maybe it was not even the right action to begin with to kill that dragon or any other "dangerous" monster.
For somebody like a elf that lived through multiple empires and faced countless of such dangers it is merely another usual millennium.
Elves are the pessimist pragmatists that everyone dislikes because they know what's up by sheer experience before anybody even gets a grasp of what is even going on in the first place.

They're my favourite fantasy race and whenever I have the opportunity I play as one.
I prefer the "high elf" kind, though, the ones that live in grand cities made out of silver, are aristocratic and things like that, though the "wood elf" archetype is nice too.
I think D&D dark elves are kind of too exaggerated in how evil and while the setting actually acknowledges this I just can't like it. I do like the warhammer fantasy dark elves though since they are actually kind of functional.

Which are the settings where elves are straight up hostile? In most of the more popular ones, elves are,at worst, isolationists, and at best kind and welcoming.
For example, there's the High Elves on Warhammer Fantasy. They're arrogant dicks, sure, but they still fight on the side of order and good, and help humanity whenever they can, as long as they stay the fuck out of their donut island.
Sure there's the "dark elf" archetype but those are designed to be completely evil.
