From what I've seen, it looks less focused on arenas than 2016. I don't think I saw a single enemy spawn in front of the player, or any doors locked until all the area's enemies had been killed.

Having a giant hole in the center of their faces was more interesting than just giving us generic zombies with pentagrams on their foreheads. Also, I think Hell Knights have eyes now, which makes them a bit less unique, and I'm not sure how I feel about cacodemons having blue mouths/blood.

It's a Nerf Shotgun that used to be transparent red. It took some mighty efforts to make it look like it does now. Painted it all black first, then used masking tape on the parts I wanted to keep black, painted the rest metallic, so on and so forth. Then I added small detail, burn marks, blood, etc.

Based. Most anons on Yea Forums aren't old enough to remember playing good Doom games, they don't know what they're missing.

Here's my personal belief.
I think they originally left the identity of the Doomslayer ambigious because they wanted to test the waters for fan-reaction. That's why the Knight Sentinal leader and Doomslayer are both mixed up with one another, because the writers couldn't decide if Doomslayer should be this new angry character that's mad because he fucked up and resurrected his own son and sacrificed his own order or the same angry marine from Doom 1 + 2 who just simply ascended and happened to be at the right time and at the right place to replace the old Knight Sentinal Leader who fucked up and betrayed his own order.
The reason for this ambigiouty was to see how fans reacted. If it didn't get a good reaction from old school boomers, then they'd appeal more to the "new character who is an alternate dimension Knight Sentinal leader" thing to distance itself from old Doom and make it it's own thing. This is provable because in Doom 2016, Doomslayer's face model in game looks radically different from his older incarnations.
Now that they've seen old boomers actually enjoy the game and ask for more of the older games content and speculate that Doomguy is Doomslayer. They've started to imply it again, first by hinting at it in Quake Champions with the Daisy codex, then changing his face model in Eternal to look more like classic Doomguy, then downright showing the ghost of the Knight Sentinal Leader on his throne.

D64 makes it clear that the D1 Marine was, to some extent, traumatized and exhausted by the Phobos Invasion. If anything, staying in hell would be more likely to drive him insane than the kind of righteous anger that they went for with D16.

It's implied that the marine from D2 and Final Doom blew a big enough blow to Hell to reduce the invasion forces to nil. D64 was only able to happen because the Mother Demon was just barely able to break containment and revive a sizeable. The D1 Marine's job was basically just to wander hell, nipping buds for the rest of his life.

That's not to say that the scenario D16 went with was impossible, it's just that they made a conscious effort to change direction from the track for characterization that the franchise was already on, and there's an argument to be made that it's less engaging than the hail-mary-plan mindset of the original marines.

The GKs would be fine if they were faster. There should be no GK that is as long as the one where you shove a glowing core down a Mancubi's throat. That is just way too long and breaks the pace of battle.

The glory kill mechanic would fine if it didn't make enemies stagger.

My only problem with it is that it locks you into place killing whatever movement you had going on, which is suicide on difficulties like Ultra Violence. I like the idea of the mechanic, it advocates you get into the fight as much as possible, but as is it definitely needs work. A good place to start is momentum based glory kills. If you are moving, you perform a different animation that keeps your current movement speed and direction. The faster you are the faster the animation ends and the more gory it is (To incentivize people to go as fast as possible)

Shame it's extremely obvious that the guns were not designed for center viewmodels, with the majority just covering up a metric shitload of the bottom and the path still being from the right despite visually coming from the bottom center. Eternal might fix the path since QC did but it's definitely not gonna make center viewmodels actually better.

Yeah, the fundamental problem with those pseudo-cutscenes is that they're very likely a way of masking loading screens, so they can never really be removed by future technology. Someone who plays these games in 2050 will still have to sit through these cutscenes.

I can't stomach it anymore. I love all the source mods but the story bores me to sleep now. I will say certain levels feel more open-ended which is almost making me want to boot up right now but I have sit through enough forced cutscenes in my life where I am just sick of them.
Same goes for the intro to Half-Life 1. I love the game itself way more than 2 though because there's significantly less down time. I generally feel nothing but resent for the series. It's Symphony Of The Night syndrome for me. Altogether I enjoyed them, but the negative impact it had on the industry/franchise taints my own experience.

Alright, I am the original guy. It is a bit misleading to say that there are no unskippable cutscenes, I would agree that I was wrong, and I'm sorry for not elaborating properly. The thing is that these sections are extremely few and far between to the point where it is not a big issue. My biggest issue with the game is that I feel it retreads Doom 1 too much. While almost everything works very differently from how it used to, there's only 1 or 2 new weapons, 1 or 2 new demons, 1 new boss, and the spiderdemon is the final boss again. I don't think that Doom 2016 is a perfect game, and I do think that they should remove shit like Hayden forcing you to sit there and listen, but you also have to admit that this complaint is way too small and inconsequential for the number of times it's brought up in every Doom thread. Why not complain in every doom thread about the actual issues with the game, not the fact that for about 3 minutes in every playthrough you are frustrated and have to sit through a boring cutscene?

I have tried to make it clear my biggest gripes are far from the cutscenes, but to say unskippable cutscenes in Doom is not a problem crossing a line with me. That's wrong. There is no need for unskippable cutscenes at all. Even Doom 3 let you skip SOME cutscenes. Half-Life style set-pieces have no place in Doom. I cannot be convinced otherwise. I don't expect to convince anyone either. I will not just accept it, though.

Obviously Doomguy was still just stretching his legs and rubbing the sand out of his eyes throughout D44M, he literally only just woke up at the start. He's wide awake now in Eternal, hence why he's more mobile and able to grunt again.

id software took over and saved it. They made it function more like an arena shooter but with demonic transformation as a power-up.

Definitely, I am not rejecting it altogether as a possibility, but I never understood how people came to the conclusion that Doomslayer was the Betrayer just because the Betrayer was mentioned in the Codex. It makes no sense, especially seeing as the Knights Sentinel treated Doomguy with tons of respect in Doom 2016 and the lore pretty much has them praise him. So it would make no sense for him to be the betrayer. Really I am just humouring people who believe that theory by saying it MAY have been a possibility at some point in development, but at the point Doom Eternal is, I highly doubt it. Although personally I believe 2016 Doomslayer was supposed to be Doom 3 Marine (his leaked 2016 face model looks similar to the Doom 3 one) but then they changed it to OG Doomguy in Eternal and QC once they realised Boomers liked OG more, kinda glad they did honestly, because Doom 3 Marine just doesn't fit.

HL2-esque cutscenes are an enormous flaw of any game they're featured in. It's one thing to have an immersive, first person cutscene that you can just skip, but being stuck in a room with someone yammering narrative points at you with no way to skip past it is honestly pretty stupid, and I'm surprised the concept was still present in games as late as 2016.

Hell, even Far Cry 2 gave the player an immersive option to skip these kinds of segments, and that was released in 2008.

I really like enemy designs in eternal and how they're more faithful to the first 2 games. I'm not being a nostalgia fag, they just generally look better. The simplicity makes them look scarier, the more detailed and insect-like they are, the more generic it feels. The cyberdemon in Doom 2016 looked fucking terrible. To show my un-bias, the hell knights and baron of hell in Doom 2016 look really good, much better than the original.

Glory kills are fast, kinetic, they didn't really break the flow in the first place, and all of those things are being intentionally augmented in Eternal for the sake of catering to people like you. They also change the gameplay so that when you are at low health, you don't become defensive, instead you become offensive so that you can get the glory kills. In harder difficulties, it's even a detriment to use them at times. It also aids the level design because you don't have to go back and look for health constantly, and it especially complements the arena style of level design since for a short period of time, you're locked in and can't run to go look for stuff.

Glory kills is suicide in Nightmare or U-Nightmare because you are stuck in one place while the demons might close in and instakill you the instant your i-frames are over. And all for 2-5 hp you get per Glory kill
The higher difficulties are 100% balanced around staying far and dodging like a madman. And Syphon grenades + Infinite ammo if you make it that far.

People say this, but I've always found glory kills really useful on high difficulties. That said, they're definitely not necessary, I just beat the game without doing any except the obligatory ones on bosses.
