By the second lap, first place will have built so much momentum that even the blueshells take an eternity to reach him, chances are he doesn't get hit by half of them before crossing the finish line,. At that point you can put the controller aside, because you will never catch up to them, as seen on every single scoreboard, where "miraculously" first place finishes at least 10 seconds before the 2nd 100% of the time. I'm sure they drove well, but even then, it's not like every other player is shit, and so I believe it has partially to do with item balance.

Blue Shell will only hit people directly in it's path, not unlike an unjuiced Warp-Orb which makes it easy to avoid. Juiced Warp-Orb (which is what you should be aiming for) goes out of it's way to to attack everyone directly in front of you making it better for the guy in last place to get at least get back in the race.

1st place means you've almost definitely won, assuming you're not at the beginning of the race still and might get itemed.
2nd place means you have a slight chance at winning but are still at a huge disadvantage because 1st place will be constantly dropping shit and you better hope 3rd place doesn't get a missle.
3rd - 6th place is a fucking warzone of item spam, you will not win but if you're lucky you can zoom to 2nd place with a mask.
7th and 8th place means you will soon be in 3rd - 6th place soon thanks to clocks but you won't win.
tl;dr if you don't get hit by items at the start of a race you win.

They may just wanted to have an incentive to keep people playing for as long as possible. If all it took was grinding out offline races for a week to empty out the store then I bet a decent chunk of folks might have felt like they "finished" the game at that point and stopped caring as much. There should be some way to improve it though for the offline only people. Like better rewards for more difficult feats like playing on hard, beating Oxide times or getting Platinum relics. As it stands now once you unlock everything tied to single player stuff there's no incentive at all to go for difficulty/variety when grinding, the best thing is to just grind out the shortest tracks possible against easy AI.

Balanced is outright crap right now. They're slower than Accel despite the in-game stats saying otherwise, Turning actually accelerates to their top speed faster than Balanced (and isn't actually that much slower in comparison), and the class's stats are outright misleading. They need to be buffed to actually reflect their jack-of-all-trades gimmick properly instead of being "turning but slightly faster".

I'd make changes to controls before anything because for some reason Accel/Turning have far more snappy and precise steering than Speed/All-around do and it's really jarring. It makes the latter prone to oversteer because of the deadzones while steering.
Also, Speed characters have this really strange exit angle on powerslides which sends them away from the direction they were powersliding. It's worth getting used to, but I would rather it just didn't happen.

Powersliding generates more reserves than trick jumps but trick jumps/jumping in general seems to allow you more movement in air which may help with taking turns tighter on Tiny Arena in particular.
