Realistically, Star Citizen is taking the amount of dev time that most large MMOs take. The only pitfall to the crowdfunding model is that it requires you to technically announce the game at the very start of development, rather than just a few months before release in order to maximize hype.

afaik a lot of the tech they wanted for it didn't exist yet and the dev time has gone into developing those systems.
It's pretty impressive to do what they've done so far in a multiplayer environment without load screens or obvious instancing. If it was optimized better I'd play it more.

Star Citizen does a lot of things better than most games in the industry. The couple of things it doesn't do well is release or be developed properly.

I learned how to make my own games, made a space combat minigame and released it as an asset pack for people to make their own space games with, in the time since i learned about Star Citizen
