I also really dislike the mechanics but video games as a service is becoming more an more common. People want that recurring revenue stream because it's easy. I don't play games with monthly subs and I don't buy games that have $100+ dlc and season passes, but it is what supports the industry. Without these things there would be fewer games overall and you wouldn't even have a choice. The surprise mechanics let me play a lot of games and not use those parts.
