he put it on easy? idk, i only played it on the hardest settings. the AI is not great, but show me a game where it is. in kiwami 1 the enemies are much more active than in 0, especially with counters and trips, it makes for a much more tedious experience. There's a certain balance that has to be kept. Personally, the combat in Yakuza games is one of the worst parts, it's really about wrecking mobs with overpowered moves. boss fights require some strategy.

Only time you'll get anything resembling a challenge is if you use the items that lower you defences significantly, and ones that make enemies far more aggressive, also maybe ones that disable heat moves too.
Other than that, I don't think anyone has ever claimed Yakuza has good combat. It's been pretty brainless since day 1, and I don't understand why they refuse to get rid of pause healing.
I've been to cities like Shenzhen before where they have massive cluttered multistory markets. To answer your question they do have fire escape stairwells but they are typically out of the way and not easy to find and nobody uses them. Its a different culture understand. Many of these floorplans were made with the idea that it was more ideal for the consumer were in the west you have people liking the notion of a healthy alternative since obesity is a problem and the Chinese don't care about safety in the case of an actual fire so stairwells are obscure. The fear around escalators was a recent thing but the buildings with a lot of use were old. I don't know if they still are afraid of escalators though.

The jump from 2 to Kenzan wasn't amazing either. It wasn't until 4-5 that the engine was tolerable. Same with how Judgment is now. It plays fucking miles better than 6 or K2. Runs at stable 30fps on Pro as did 6 and K2 for the most part. That's more than could be said for Kenzan.

Problems with Dragon Engine combat:
-Massive fucking input lag because the engine is totally unstable and can't stay at 30fps
-Insanely long startup frames on top of said input lag not only make the combat slow and clunky with that awful "underwater" feeling, it even fucks up the input windows so even getting the combo you want is a pain in the ass
-Enemies blocking no longer just block, they halt your combo, making combat EVEN SLOWER
-Enemies group up into packs and attacks typically hit 2-3 enemies in street fights, meaning 2-3 times the chance of being blocked
-Enemies can not only block out of hitstun, they turn to face you after a single hit meaning flanking/dodging around an attacking enemy is pointless
-Extreme Heat mode is shit and the emphasis on it is shit. The only reason they even pushed extreme heat so hard is because they dumped all their heat action animations in the garbage can and were too lazy to make new ones
Yakuza 4, 0, and K1 are the only Yakuza games with good combat. Yakuza 3 and 5 are ok. 6 and K2 are fucking trash.

Well I'm sorry you feel that way. Most people really enjoyed it. I'm sure if you gave it more of a chance you'd enjoy it too.
Playing on PC fixes one problem, you're still left with a hundred others. It doesn't even make the combat feel more responsive because everything is so goddamned slow
0 and 4 are trash, and literally the easiest games in the series. Judgment actually has some challenging elements to it like far more aggressive enemies, and mortal wounds.

I'm playing through on Hard and between flux fissure, wall attacks, flip attacks, and the EX triangle spam combos absolutely nothing in this game is a threat.

0 and 4 are the best games in the series and if you disagree you are wrong. There's a good reason 0 brought in the most new fans.

that's the whole reason they dumbed down the enemies so much
0 and 4 have the most fundamentally robust combat systems and the most combat variety. 0 has Kiryu's multiple styles and the benefit of 60fps and a fuckmassive library of heat animations, and 4 introduced a huge amount of new mechanics like heavy charge attacks, heat combo finishers, parrying and multiple throw types/stances.
Judgement's combat struggles because Dragon Engine has fundamental flaws that the devs can't fix, they can only work around. That's what the wall running and enemy jumping are there for, to circumvent the problems described in since they can't actually fix them.
If you play any DE game make it Judgement and skip Y6 and K2, but if you want the best and most developed combat in the series the game you're looking for is 0.
